Would be ok if pennant and ethers boh start and supply them with crosses! Johnson will probably start at left back tomorrow so pennant could get on the outside of him and whip balls in, however if pulis plays delap their and invites Johnson onto us he really would show himself up!!

Didn't gon on Sunday.
But even Denis Smith didn't seem to think it worked as a partnership and that they were kind of getting in eack other's way.

Will Mama be on the bench?
Personally I'd go Ric/Walters on the bench.

It's a very dangerous pairing as long as Pennant and Ethers are on. Otherwise we'll be watching some despairing route 1 football.

Villa fans went ape shit on the odd occasion when O'Neil played Carew and Heskey for just that reason, didn't they?
It's all very well having a masterplan of 2 big lumps+2 wingers = crosses= goals.
But surely you need a balanced partnership or the whole attacking side of your game crumbles

That along with his transfer prowess made me realise that O'Neil isn't that good a manager. Totally agree about the balanced partnerships comment.

We'll get beaten whatever happens. Correct. Park the bus, work hard, defend, give the ball away, concede.........game over

I'm trying to think positive thoughts before bedtime though. ;D I'll await condemning it before I see it with my own eyes, but in theory it doesn't seem a good enough combination of styles. If we line up with Rory on the right I might not be able to control myself.

Fuller and Carew for me, with Ethers and Pennant on the wings. Tin hat on time Delap and Whelan in the middle, IMHO sill our best CM partnership.

With Pennant and Etherington on the wings that could be a very good partenership And Rory and Deano in midfield. If thats the only way to get the wingers on the pitch at the same time thats what it will have to be. Its completely barren and devoid of any football ability but I can live with it.

Anybody who went on Sunday(apart from one man, natch) will know it's a ludicrous idea. As usual, we were clueless until Fuller came on. How Jones is an automatic selection beggars belief, he's absolutely useless.

I don't really think playing 2 relatively immobile big lads, who don't complement each other, is ever the answer, whether you play with 2 wingers or not. The slight extra % of danger you create from set-pieces and on the odd occasion you get a dangerous delivery in are balanced out by the lack of mobility and threat on the break in open play. You're completely right, FM. And therefore the Carew/Jones pairing must be avoided. They're VERY similar, Carew only a couple of inches taller.
