www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8652_6673616,00.html In a statement posted on their website, Villa say: "We understand Sunderland Football Club's need to explain to their naturally disappointed supporters why Darren Bent has been allowed to leave their club. "It is disappointing, however, that Sunderland should try to besmirch the reputation of the player and Aston Villa Football Club in the process. "We wish to make clear that at no time did Aston Villa make an inappropriate approach to the player or unfairly compromise the business of Sunderland Football Club. "Darren only became aware of his possible transfer AFTER Sunderland's game against Newcastle on Sunday and AFTER we had agreed with Sunderland the essence of the deal which led quickly to Darren's arrival at Villa Park on Tuesday. "It is only because of some comments emanating from the Stadium of Light that we have felt compelled to respond and set the record straight."

Thank fuck for that. I thought it was just me who could no longer stand Sunderland’s ‘woe is us’ horse shit as they trundle into the distance limping under the weight of a Billion Pounds. Steve Bruce and Niall Quinn may be, but most supporters aren’t fucking stupid.

Multi-million pound contracts are not agreed, drawn up, checked, and signed in one afternoon. Villa must think we are stupid. Don't get me wrong, I am delighted with £18m for Darren Bent. Superb business. But I think it's quite clear to all that Villa were whispering big numbers in Darren Bent's ear long before we knew about it.

Doubt it. It all worked out very well for us. If Villa had came to us with that offer for a perfectly happy Darren Bent who was in top form and whilst he was sat on a tatooist's bench getting "SAFC 4 EVA" tatoo'd down his cock, we'd have still packed his bags for him. But Villa playing the "nooooo... not sweet innocent us" card is ludicrous.

For a potential £24M (or was it more you say?) Quinn would have been texting Lerner's mobile ages ago.
But, in reality, we 'knew' a while ago now & so why not Villa?
More likely, has his agent been a naughty boy and dropped a fewe hints around the Prem?

Deals can be done from start to finish very quickly. KJ to Stoke for instance, we make a bid in the morning and it's completed early afternoon.

Instead of wasting time recriminating against a club that's just loaded Sunderland with £zillions, don't you think the powers that be should be concentrating more on replacing a player who's scored more than 30% of your goals this season? eg Mamady Sidibe

Villa are asking us to believe that Darren Bent put in a transfer request, meaning he loses out on a huge loyalty bonus, without knowing for certain what his options were or what he was risking. Seems very far fetched to me. You don't make a gambit like that unless you know they deck is stacked in your favour. Bent was very clear on his sums.

Plenty cash in the bank now, yes, but we have absolutely no chance of replacing him with any real quality this window. Will be stop-gaps and shor term stuff. Bent isn't anywhere near as important to us as he was last year. In fact a Darren Bent goal hasn't won us a single point for almost 4 months now, and take penalties out of it and he was only our 3rd highest scorer, but fact remains that right now a single injury to Gyan and we are fucked.

So are you likely to sign a striker in Jan or would Bruce be happy to wait till the summer? There any rumours floating around with any substance about who you'd sign this window?

I simply don't believe that any Sunderland fan with a triple digit IQ can see the sale of their top striker as 'a good bit of business'. The only way to replace Bent is to go out and spend a similar amount of money on another top striker or risk up to half of it on an gamble in the hope it pays off. When you are in the top 3rd of the Prem you need to be keeping your top players not cashing in on them to teams 10 places below you in the league. What profit have they made on him? 6 odd million? Enough to buy a Dave Kitson!?! Mental.

Paris St Germain are determined to keep Stephane Sessegnon and have urged the midfielder to rejoin the group. I think Sunderlands 'good bit of business' may help pave the way...

Welbeck and Campbell both injured and won't be back for weeks rather than days. But we won't be spending massively on a striker. We won't be replacing Bent this window. It will be cheap stop-gaps to get us through the rest of the season. No more.

Sessegnon and Muntari are long standing targets. I think we will still be in for them. N'Zogbia too. I can see us spending some good money on midfield players like those, a stop gap striker like Bothroyd, and then trying to sign Welbeck in the summer as the Bent replacement. Just a hunch, though.

I'm surprised you didn't get Carew as part of the deal as he would be quite cheap and fit the bill of a strong striker who is a good target man. I'm sure we could do you a deal for KJ, keep the £4M and give us the nice round £20M and he's yours

We have worried about Bruce's inability to resist a massive offer for Henderson long before this Bent nonsense. Bruce is a total transfer-junkie. If a massive bid comes in for Henderson, all he will see is the deals he could get done with that money. It's a huge worry. We should be making sure we keep Henderson for another couple of years just to look after the lad himself really. He'll not get the games he needs and one of the biggies yet.

I'm sure that we can all recall Tony Scholes explaining a few years ago in private that Carl Hoefkens had effectively been tapped up by West Brazil, but that everybody does it so to lodge a formal complaint would be asking for trouble.

How much of the 18 Mill will you get spurs get a sell of payment of 3 mill and the you owe the 3 mill so Maybe you only get 12 ? The £3m we still owe them is just the last payment from the initial £10m fee we agreed. Like you did with Jones, we were paying the Bent fee to spurs over 3 years, so we had one to go. Not sure what kind of a clause they had for a resale. I think it was 20% of any profit we made, so around £1.5m, making it £4.5m in total. However, according to Quinn we only received around the a quater of the total (potential) Bent fee from Villa yesterday, with the rest paid in installments. So that means of the £6m we got from Villa for Bent, £4.5m has gone straight to Spurs. Mind, that is everything paid up to Spurs and A LOT of money still to come from Villa, every penny of it ours. By my recking, we have already recieved £1.5m and still have £12m at least to come from Villa.
