I was talking to a Toon share holder yesterday, as a share holder she receives company newsletters.
She was shocked at the price we had paid for Ameobi, for what is in essence a 3 month loan. £570,000 going up to a cool £1m if we get promoted.
Mr Coates, even if these figures aren't accurate this is the mark of a true fan to gamble all of this money for some one to play 6 games.
Hats off to him, to a chairman that truly believes, and has the financial clout to back his dreams. I never thought I would be saying this a few years ago in his last tenure as chairman, when I watched 7 goals hit the back of our net against Birmingham, how time and the amassing of wealth have changed our views and ambitions.
Here's to our final push, and to all of those out there like our chairman who believe we can get to the promised land. It's the old saying "To be big you have to think big" and we have people around us who certainly think that.
Lets hope the gamble pays off. Gooooaaaaarrrrrrn STOKE

I don't like the way Coates has played about with SCFC over the last 23 years but he has backed his own man 100% this season. We could ask no more of him. I hope his judgement is sound.

I think everybody stands united in the debarcle of the last few years of his last stint as chairman so in fairness we should herald the way he has backed the club this time around. I mean I never imagined that even with the money he has, that we would be beating the club transfer record twice in one season. A big gamble from a gambling tycoon get in there Coatsey.

Those figures are true and this deal makes it the biggest loan deal in British football history.
£25,000 a week wage is similar to that of the top 4 sides in the premiership, i am amazed and very impressed with Mr Coates this season.

Proven to be all about risk equalling reward for Uncle Peter. Top marks to him this season for his backing, support and belief of TP and the lads.

Dont talk such shite. So this is a bigger loan than Carlos Tevzes at Manchester United? Or Mascherano at Liverpool? Or countless others I can think of. The moon's made of cheese marra and the world's flat. Great committment from Coates, but come down to earth fella.

I was talking to a Toon share holder yesterday, as a share holder she receives company newsletters. Newcastle isnt a PLC anymore fella, I'd query the integrity of your contact. Mike Ashley has an appalling reputation in the City for the lack of information provided to the shareholders of Sports Direct PLC (that is a PLC and is listed on the Stock Exchange) and is always criticised by the fund managers for being so "slack" .... So he buys a football club, becomes, effectively its sole shareholder (via a number of investment vehicles) and then writes letter to himself ....? This breaking years of being the most private, anonymous businessman in England?????

Fantastic work from Mr Coates. We would never have had what we have so far with the Icelanders in charge. It shows the ambition when we break our transfer record twice and bringing in players permanently like Ryan Shawcross and loans like Shola are an indication of what we can do now we have Coates in.
Im willing to forgive and forget his last tenure as Chairman and I'd be astonished to find any fan that still dislikes Coates after what he has done this season. It's a huge gamble the money we have paid out for Shola, but Coates must believe, and so do I.

Has the spending on players over the last 12 months massively outstripped the income from players?

Has the spending on players over the last 12 months massively outstripped the income from players? You do the math .... A fair and valid point. Although what many of us fail to understand is the day to day operating costs involved in running a "business" like Stoke. Yes, the in's and outs probably cancel each other out. But what about the 3/4M it costs to run a club like Stoke anyway. One imagines gate money does not cover this. So in net terms I imagine Coates is well out of pocket, even if we include players that have gone. His losses though are mitigated by the assets he has and the value of the club in balance-sheet terms. So in reality, COates is the net winner any way you look at it.

How generous will he be if we get promoted?
Will he continue to be a True Fan or
Will he take his winnings and run?
I'm a synic but, i'm also very happy and suprised at what he done this season.
Trust, not yet but, thank you so far Peter.

Ameobi = £500,000 for 6 games Parkin = nearly £500,000 for subs bench all season Putting it that way PC has made one heck of a gamble but i'm sure Ameobi will contribute more to our season than Parkin. Well done PC!!!!!

Look at this another way. Current club valuation has got to be £25m plus now with purchase of Brit and Mich, little bank borrowing and real prospects of promotion. With promotion add £10m-15m on that valuation. Now the Ameobi investment seems to make sense. What I don't understand is the financial structure of the deal with sign-on fee for loan, when Keegan is "supposed" to be mates with Peter Coates. No doubt there's an agent involved somewhere.

www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/sport/football.html?in_page_id=1779&in_article_id=549508The Ameobi figures are mind-boggling. But, according to Jewell, we aren't paying much less for Pearson - a guaranteed loan fee of 500,000 whether we take him permanently or not plus some/all of his wages. Looks like it'll be around £1.5m for the 2....for 6 weeks. If we go up, fair enough. We've made inroads into the total payments for 2 players we're going to use in the Prem. But if we stay down, we've lost the equivalent of a club record fee in a month and a half on 2 players we won't see again and we're left with bus fare home. It's a gamble, but you've got to take your hat off to Coates.

Apologies Pattaya, hadnt realised you were purely quoting the Daily Mail article. So sorry for the rough treatment further up the thread. Stand by what I said mind, there are a host of other loan deals "bigger" than the Ameobi one. Tevez for starters, the lad at Liverpool I mentioned. Although if those numbers are true its probably the biggest loan that the Championship has ever witnessed.

Maybe they're just talking about a short-term loan?
It's an eye-watering figure for a Championship team for 6 weeks, and hard to compare with what a world superpower pays out for a season or 2-season 'loan' for a player with bizarre ownership and registration issues.

Yes also a huge hand for Coates this season...no complaints from me....but its a gamble worth taking for the returns on offer. I will however always have an uneasy feeling about Coates as he has always tried to balance the outgoings with a hefty sale.... if we miss promotion and just maybe one player is through the door for a couple of mill.

Oh aye, agree totally. I cant wrap my head around those numbers. Not for Ameobi anyway. Best part of 600K for six games plus his wages. Thats 125K a game. Surely, had two/three teams towards the top end of the Premiership known we had that kind of cash to spend they'd have made one or two available. Just thinking out loud, but say Saha, Walcott, Crouch and so on. None of the above will feature much between now and the end of the season bar the odd half or odd ten mins here or there. Probably unrealistic, but just trying to make a point. Call my a cynic but I doubt those numbers. I just get the feeling that the media, and other managers in the Championship have it in for us and are looking to undermine/embarrass us whenever they can. Isnt Scholes on record as saying the rumours were wide of the mark. No smoke without fire mind, so it seems certain we've paid a big chunk of dosh.
