Messi is the more consistent footballer, and he doesn't have to contend with Spanish central defenders trying to decapitate him every 30 seconds.
But fuck me, Maradona was beautiful on his day. Diego for me.

I think the final answer will only become apparent if maradonna saves west ham from relegation this season

Does Messi have a better record at a younger age too?

for me its Maradonna, simply because Messi is yet to do it on the international stage.
Barcelona's style of play suits him to the ground and lets face it, he's got 2 of the top 3 midfielders in the world playing behind him in the Barca side......ive yet to see him truely recreate his club form for Argentina.
Maradonna used to take Argentina through tournaments nearly on his own!

Yes you guessed it, an inept, overweight cheating prick living on past glories, Maradonna !!!

I'm undecided myself.
Some of the early 80s stuff like 'Lucky Star' is absolutely belting.

Maradona was just the elegant master of everything. He just exuded quality, style, dominance and arrogance everywhere he went. Boca was Maradona. Napoli was Maradona. Argentina was Maradona. He didn't just carry teams, he became them. As phenomenal a player as Messi is, you can't say the same about him. He just doesn't have the same aura. Diego Armando Maradona for me.

I never saw Maradonna play, but Messi is mint.
He's the only player around who makes me watch teams I have no interest in watching.

George Best will always be my favourite footballer but I had to admit, when Maradona came along he was easily the best footballer I'd ever seen. He still is and by some margin. Messi is a very, very good player but I agree with Potterlog in that Maradona had such a massive positive effect on every team he ever played for. Call him a cheat if you will and a tactical idiot out in SA but anyone who saw the little fella at his best has seen the greatest all-round footballer in the past 50 years IMO.

Messi is just pure magic & an honest and humble player. However marradona was just a fat prick. If Messi can prodce it at the very top level i.e. for argentina at a world cup then he can be the best player ever to kick a ball

messi is magic, the way he changes a game is ridiculous, Arsenal last season, champions league proves it

If i'm getting no reply from Denman regards his beautiful arse video clip, i'll give my input here Maradona is head and shoulders above Messi(and i hate maradona for '86 and don't really like or dislike Messi) But when you can drag your national team virtually single handed(no pun intended) to win world cups and have an influence on EVERY game you play in,then it has to be Maradona. Messi is fantastic and can do some amazing skills or score goals that makes your jaw drop, but the oriental bloke outside every shopping centre with a football can do fancy tricks, don't mean he can play football !! Don't get me wrong,Messi is best footballer on planet playing now,but many many games he has gone missing when he gets it up him,or someone somehow manages to stop the ticky-tacky play of Barca midfield. Maradona grabbed every game by scruff of neck and if they( argies or maradonas club at time) didn't win they would of come mighty close due to him. So in conclusion, although Messi is best player here & now today,he is and never will be as good as maradona,in my opinion ( The cheating coke taking ball punching fat greasy twat)

Being quite young it would have to be Messi for me, I watch Barcelona on Sky Sports purely for Messi. He's magic.
When he starts doing it for his country is when he will become the greatest.

i hate maradona hand of god and all that but in terms of effect on a team and making an everlasting impression on the game messi doesn't even come close, and won't until he can drag a shite side to victory, he is the best player in the world don't get me wrong, but i'd look a decent player in that barca team and until messi does it on the world stage the 2 can't be compared for me maradonna was awesome simple as that, even though he was a cheat.

Maradona was better than Messi. He could do everything that Messi can do but on top of that he was built like a tank and incredibly strong. I love to watch Messi play but he's no Maradona.
