He has a lengthy list of achievements to his name, has played in the 3 biggest leagues in the world and held his own. Cut it on the international stage and been good for the profile of the sport (as well as himself) as much as there are areas to drag him down on, affairs (potential or otherwise), association with Tom Cruise etc - when it comes to reflecting on his career and reputation within the game there are few with the prestige attached that he has in the modern game.

I have no problems with that. Probably the most significant British player of his era. He wasn't my favourite player but he was possibly the best in the world at free kicks and crosses for a number of years. And if the current squad of "superstars" had half of his committment, we'd have a better side than we do.
To be honest, this is the award Giggs should have won last year and not the main award.

'Lifetime Achievement'? I didn't know he is dead? Perhaps, I missed it on BBC News?

Good on him. A credit to the game and to england. Some of the crap he gets is completely unjustified and simply down to his success. As an englishman living in Australia he certainly seemed in a different class to Timmy Cahill when they were both supporting their respective world cup bids. An icon of football over the past 10 - 15 years.

Ah of course, because of all those International trophies he lead the England team to under his captaincy......
Shouldn't get it while he's still playing really. Let him carry on as ambassador for England and for sport a bit more, he's only in his 30s, by that reckoning he could be given another lifetime achievement in about 35 years time. Then that's 2 lifetime achievement awards in 1 lifetime, unfair.

I cant see folks problem with Beckham, The problem in this country is anyone who is successful gets knocked for no particular reason. Ok hes done nothing with England as far as trophys but thats because of the crock of shit hes had to play with, Where as at club level hes been very successful........Good on him i say.

Says the bloke who waxes lyrical about some of the shit we currently have and have had wearing the Stoke shirt And they don't deserve a liftetime achievement award either. I've got no problem with Beckham. Since he left Man Utd he's not the complete arrogant tosser he once was and always comes across as a decent bloke. Lifetime acheivements in your 30's though? That's just plain daft. If he hadn't married a pop star when they were at their height of popularity around the world then this hysteria that follows him round would never have been the same. Good player, hard worker and a decent role model (assuming the infidelity rumours are just that) but hasn't done anything special that deserves this sort of award. If he's still around in another 30 years then perhaps.

I think he was unfaithful. But I couldn't care less. Neither do i really but his footballing achievements are nothing out of this world and it's his off the field publicity that has got him the award. A lifetime's achievement for milking the papers, celebrity magazines and having a new haircut every month is what he deserves. Getting one for football is a bit much and about 30 years too premature.

One of only two British players ever to score in three World Cups. 115 England caps many of which were as captain.

If David Beckham looked like Paul Scholes and visa versa it would be Scholes picking up the award Thats how shallow our society is that Judas twat Scholes turned his back on his country when it looked like he might not be first choice. Becjham went from being one of the most vilified players in English football to almost single handedly dragging us to a world cup in what was still one of the most brilliant individual performances I've ever seen (Greece), and has been one of the most worthy captains of our great country. He's stepped into the role of ambassador for English football, and at a time when most don't seem to give a shit about playing for England, he's shown how desperate he is to still be involved. I don't agree with giving a lifetime achievement award to any current player, but if we're going to give it to one, I'm not going to argue with it being Beckham.

Beck's Lifetime Achievement Award is surely a double-header, for football success and an amazing and surely unique character.
Anyone who can forgive a manager who could have blinded him in one eye when thuggishly kicking a football at him, can shake hands with Blatter, without puking, and spend his whole life with such charm and a natural smile, while living with one who doesn't do smiles, at any time, gets my vote. I wish him well.

For scoring a few free kicks That and captaining his country with over 100 caps and being the best player in world football in 98/99 as he helped the Shit to the treble. He won the title in Spain and always gives 100% for club and country. He is a fabulous role model, something sorely lacking in todays game which is packed with scum, Barton, and cheating cunts, Fibreglass. Well deserved award IMO
