He'll be about as much use as Ireland for them.

Past his sell by date. Villa should stick with the young lads they are bringing through.

I've no idea how good he is now (nor what his stamina levels would be) but he doesn't strike me as the player to get Villa back on track. A year or so back Villa seemed to be a fixture just outside the top four spots but they look every bit a mid table team now.

They gave Man Ure a very good game at the weekend and the young lads they have coming through are promising, but uit may take a year or two for them to develop back into a team ready to challenge the top 4/5 clubs as Lerner doesn't look set to splash big heaps of cash on a few ready made stars to complement the kids.

He's 37...!
If he's the answer then just how poor must Stephen Ireland's form and work rate have been.. ???

Pires have obviously been brought in to replace Ashley Young who will leave in the window. He was a very good player in his Arsenal days, but at 37 years of age, he simply will not have the stamina for the Premier League, guaranteed . . . . and what does his signing say about Aston Villa right now.
A club on the decline who lost the one man capable of keeping them near to the top - MoN and hemorraging their best players at an alarming rate.
To be honest, if I heard that Stoke were bringing him in, I'd be appalled by the clubs lack of ambition and foresight. Maybe we're getting to the stage where we are actually better than clubs like Aston Villa now?

Too old now for sure, but what a player in his day.

Also, he won't be able to play for them till the New Year when the squads can have new players registered? Rules could be different for unattached players though...

Smacks of desperation to me. A very good player in his day but HIS DAY was several years ago. Much more of a 'name' than a good signing at his age and stage of career IMO. If I were a Villa fan, I'd be hoping for much better than him.
