..if you believe what you read in the press. Heady times at the Brit.
f there's truth in the reports of deals being in place for the summer, I wonder if they're both dependant on promotion - or just Ameobi's?
Stoke move for Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi 28/03/2008
Stoke City have swooped for Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi in a deal that could be a record £3million transfer for the club.
Manager Tony Pulis pulled off the loan coup with minutes to spare before the window shut last night.
And Ameobi's move will become permanent at the end of the season.
Stoke are also paying a huge loan fee to take Ameobi for the run-in, giving them a Premier League forward for the final weeks, which they hope will take them into the top flight.
Stoke set to land Stephen Pearson 27/03/2008 Stoke boss Tony Pulis is set to sign promotion lucky charm Stephen Pearson, whose goal shot Derby to the big-time.
Pearson, who scored the winner at Wembley last year which sent the Rams into the top-flight, will go out on loan and the move will become a full £2million transfer.

£2m seems a lot for pearson, and i doubt that ameobi will be sold without some sort of bidding war going on.

Sammz & "pj norkless":
shockin ain't it?
Once we get these small matters like signings & promotion out of the way, we should ignite a proper campaign - i've already seen plans afoot on that other thread i think?
p.s. oh yes, back to the thread, the penny's finally dropped with uncle Pete: he can't take it with him.

Ameobi is out of contract in the summer of 2009 - so that seems a touch high, despite his talent and Premier experience. And if what Glenn Rodent is saying, it's even more mind-boggling £2m seems excessive for Pearson if it's close to the mark. I suppose it's something to concern ourselves with in mid-May when we're just recovering from the promotion hangover At least they're experienced, British players so were probably always going to be the types Pulis saw as the kind of signings to make in the Premier.

Well, Can't say we haven't TRIED to go for it! Now all we need is for players to believe in themselves, stay calm and focused...my mantra and for Tone to keep Danny well away from the left back spot (you KNOW you can Tone ) Oh... and shouldn't Owls players are ace have the badge of the owls under his name for superstitious purposes ?

Based on Ameobis injury history i would hope that ANY deal is based on him proving his longterm fitness otherwise its money down the drain. As for Pearson .. Championship possibly ...Premiership Never.

I think that if promotion happens Ameobi would be a good signing but we have still got to do a lot more to make a really good go of staying in the Prem

Its all good stuff from Tone, Scholes & Coates. Get them in now on loan with a view to perm. Should get us up auto, but are here to help in play-offs if required. Then they are signed on perm deal in summer as a proven member of squad. If they don't work out, they go back! How cool is that?
They reckon that's what hobbled Billy Davies at Derby. Waited until after play-offs to sort his own contract out, then signed panic-buys (Griffin included!!) when most of the deals had already been done.
Loving being a Stoke fan at the minute!!

It seems a lot, especially if we can go into the summer as a Premier League club. Then we can attract lots of Bosman palyers for free, players we have no chance of getting if we stay in the Championship. Strange then to agree on paying £ 5 mill for these two players. Or has PC now put in a huge amount in the transfer kitty?

It's cool IF we have the facility in the deal to put the kibosh on it, bren. But often these days, it seems the permanent deal has already been inked into the loan contract. It'll be interesting to see if both deals are categorically OFF if we don't go up?

Well sunderland have spent £40 million and their only just surviving. SC1

I don't think we should start kidding ourselves that if we are promoted then we're going to start signing players who're head and shoulders above the likes of Pearson and Ameobi.
We'll have to accept that we'll be undoubted favourites for relegation and that's how many players will see us too. Established players won't want to tie themselves to a brand new Premier League club who they'll consider likely to go straight back down again, and we're not going to be able to meet the wage demands of a lot of them.

Ameobi, imo, would be a fantastic permanent signing for this club.

Davef,
While i agree entirely with your sentiment i think players like Pearson & Ameobi are the sort we should target. Young, hungry players who have a point to prove are surely better than the likes of Lauren Robert/Robbie Savage/Danny Murphy "been round the block and not really arsed" type?
If that is where we start to cast our net, i believe that we could build a squad that is capable of at least competing. As 606 has stated, although Sunderland have spent £40 million, it has to be said that other than Jones, they've spent bloody badly, including the £3M (ish) we took for Higgy.

I suppose they're both in the level of signings that were always on the cards for a Stoke-type team, if we found ourselves going up - although it's always hard to gauge who you could attract.
The fee not withstanding, Ameobi would be a bit of a coup if he's fit and healthy long-term.
And at least they're both mid-20s.
