I grew up with Stoke in the early 70's - 1st goal I saw was a Greenhoff volley - Gordon Banks was my 1st hero and later Alan Hudson - sorry Tuncay is a good player but he is no Alan Hudson so for those of you wanting great expansive football a la 1975, forget it.
Anyway to my point...After the League Cup win we had a bit of cash and pushed the boat out and bought Hudson, Salmons, Hurst, Shilton et al. At the time it was a huge amount of money and we won nothing as the 4 broken legs season and the butler Street roof killed us. The financial (and footballing - quality of squad) basis was not good enough for us to survive at the top level then.
Compare that to today. Coates invests and takes a risk to get us promoted but we are being run as a business to ensure we stay where we are - not to disappear after 1976 and struggle ever since. 4 centre halfs is our insurance against another Bultler st stand roof. It's not always great to watch and yes there is nothing better that watching us take the piss with the opposition but any strategy you adopt in any walk of life has to be consistent - there are limits to how much you can deviate from that. You can be very tight and open up a bit - like Sunday - but you can't play like Blackpool and then suddenly next minute keep things tight and grind out a point. Life isn't like that.
Let's face it Waddo was brilliant but it took him 15 years to create the workings man's ballet - and for much of the 1960's there was the Waddo Wall - he built the solid basis before moving on to the attractive football we all selectively remember.
I used to get so frustrated with Waddo teams that after half time nothing would change. Huson and Salmons used to wander out of the tunnel chatting together as if they were discussing what club they were going to that night...How many times do we score between 45 and 55 minutes after Pulis has laid into them at half time (or realised his mistakes and changed things).
Let's cut the negative crap. We are Premier League! and have a strategy on and off the field to maintain that. Every year we get better. Don't expect us to be competing with the top 4. Given football's finances we'll be one of the richest clubs in the couple of years.
KEEP THE FAITH. STAY CALM. BE PATIENT. AND STOP BLOODY MOANING

Can't we ask for a bit of the middle ground though? Is it so much to ask for? It always has to be one or the other on here, it's not that black red and white.
I don't want us to open up but I'd like us not give up the first half in belief of trying to keep it tight, which isn't working because we keep conceding. Although some people see that as containment it seems.

Brilliant post.
If I was allowed one player to reincarnate from the 70s I'd have to go for Hudson. He really was a genius and is the sort of player we currently need

Great Post! I started going in 1969, so was brought up through the "Golden Era" And yes, we did defend long and hard, we had Smithy, Bluto, Jack & Pej, or took absolutely NO prisoners! Then we brought Hudson in, Josh was already there, and Salmons followed soon after, suddenly we had a team who could play, and boy could we play! Not forgetting that we had that team of phyco's still in defence as minders!! Happy Days, No, they were GREAT days! This is the closest we have been to getting back to that stage since, we flirted with it in the early 80's, but it didn't feel like this, I firmly believe, there is a real chance of history repeating it'self, and this time, if the roof blows off the Seddon, then we won't have to sell the Team!

T'was ever thus psv.
I well remember walking off Boothen Paddock in the late 60s after we'd just beaten Southampton 3-2 in a cracking game. Suprisingly, Spurs lost to Blackpool same day which sent us top of Division 1. All some miserable sod behind me could say was 'way just abite won that. conner see owt else gud abite eet'.
We have always had our fair share of moaners, its just that now, through internet and radio, they get a bit more air-time.

There is no comparison, we had a football team then that could play and take anybody on. The club would be the place, saw hudson and marsh get flattened outside ther. Osgood used to come up saturday nights for a piss up, huddy tried to get him to sign for us. Great times.

We were playing at a ground where we have won 4 times in almost 150 years of trying. We were in the bottom 3 and needed not to lose. We contained them very very well. Name one instance apart from the penalty when we were in any danger of going behind. A dodgy decision/rush of blood put us behind. At half time, Mr Negative turned things around and chased the game. Aggressive, attacking and entertaining. A half to be proud of and a successful half. Does this game really warrant the hysteria against Pulis that has been going on or should we actually strive for a reasonable middle ground?

The day that Hudson left for Arsenal was one of the saddest of my entire life. Closely followed by Jimmy going to Man U. The early 70's were a fantastic time to be a Stoke fan, we were a team to be feared and respected and everyone admired our style of play.
That isnt to detract from what Pulis has achieved but there are times when he is so bloody infuriating with him team selections especially that now we have probably the best squad of players available since those heady days of the early to mid 70's.

Boks - there was the time that they got round the back of Wilko and squared the ball across our 6 yard box but fair enough we didnt look in much trouble even if we were inviting pressure on to ourselves throughout.

Amen brother, could not have put it better myself.
The key point is that even the great and saintly waddo started off at the back by making us difficult to beat, even when we were class, yes pure class up front we still had a rock hard defence.

Very good post, psv, as are all the other posts commenting on the players we had then. For all that-I loved every one of those players of the 60/70s- I still feel the same loyalty and affinity to today's lads, and get just as much pleasure out of a win a ever I did. No matter what players, no matter what division, nothing compares with watching Stoke City. Good days are ANY days, supporting our team.

I suspect a lot of the extreme 'PHW'ery comes from a group of blokes all about 50 odd years old who have a false memory of those 'halcyon' days (probably because it coincides with when they last got laid). A bit like how everybody from my generation thinks Lou Macari was ace.

Stoke only really played Total Football once Waddo had Hudson on board. But the League Cup winning side in 1971 was the germination of this. Waddo matched a tough midfielder (eg Bernard) to play alongside more artistic midfielders (eg Dobing, Eastham) and a winger (Burrows). With the purchase of Hudson and Geoff Salmons, Waddo was able to develop a team that undoubtedly played wonderful football.
.....But this was some 10 year after getting into the top flight!! So PSV has a very valid point. Don't expect a revolution but rather a slow evolution.
I was as aghast as anybody watching the first half on Sunday. Appalling. But for all of Pulis's strange team selections his activity in the transfer market this summer represents a statement of intent - Stoke will evolve.

an excellant post mate and I agree with you 100%. One point I would make though is that I cant think of one player at our club or any other Prem club who has the vision that Hudson had. The closest I have seen in recent years is Beckham but even he was not another Hudson. The understanding he had with Greenhoff was immense and there were many examples I saw of his ability to place a pinpoint pass from deep in our half to Greenhoff in the opposition half. A short pass returned and you know he would start a run which would turn a game. Much of a game he would be wandering around the pitch looking disinterested. I agree with you Harryburrows there were many moaners around who constantly had a go at Greenhoff.I also remember there were equally as many who moaned about Hudson been lazy because he did not run around the pitch for 90 minutes at 100mph. Swampmongrel I am sorry but I take offence at your comment. There may be some over 50's who look at the Waddo era through rose tinted glasses. Clearly a number of us have a differant perspective. I do believe that the best footbal I ever saw from a Stoke team was during the Hudson period and for this reason I believe he was the best player I have ever seen in the red and hite. But it took 10 years before we reached those heights. Our journey currently has taken 4 seasons and has also been based on a solid back 4. I believe a more accurate benchmark would be to look at the team we had 5/6 seasons ago. It is obvious that the quality of the team has improved and is doing so season by season. I keep pointing out that success can only be built if we allow TP time and that if we try to run before we can walk then relegation stares us in the face. The Coates family may be pumping in money into the club but they dont have the money that Man City and Chelsea have so our progression to an all out attacking team will have to take a slower track. Whilst we remain in the Premier the cautious approach suits me fine
