Stoke City's assistant-manager Dave Kemp admits a deal to bring a fresh face to the club is not yet imminent - but says that could all change before tomorrow's transfer loan deadline.
Boss Tony Pulis is looking to boost his team's firepower, despite the arrival of loan striker Jay Bothroyd, and revealed that a deal to bring in a player fell through last week.
Potential targets including Fulham hitmen David Healy and Diomansy Kamara have been banded around the rumour mill.
But Kemp refused to identify any targets and remains both cautious and optimistic over the completion of a deal.
He said: "The manager (Pulis) brings in players and would be looking to bring in a top-of-the-line player - but those deals are not easily done.
"We had a target last week and that fell through. At the moment no deal is imminent, but that could change in the next half an hour.
"That is the way it can happen. If you look at the last transfer deadline (January 2008) things moved quickly and we did two deals (Paul Gallagher and Glenn Whelan) just before the window closed."
Meanwhile, defender Andy Wilkinson has urged his team-mates to redouble their efforts as the Championship promotion race enters the final straight.
Stoke's campaign has faltered in recent weeks with just one win in six games, but they still remain top of the table as their closest rivals have hit their own sticky patches.
Second-placed Bristol City have also only won one in six, while West Brazil have slipped to fifth after a winless three-match spell.
Wilkinson said: "We can't be complacent,. We have to go out there and start winning games, start scoring goals and keeping clean sheets."
Expect one today then ;D

I am trying to imagine Kempy being both "cautious and optimistic" at the same time! Hopefully stokelad is right and we plan to pull a rabbit (or two) out of the hat with a flourish at 4.59 pm tomorrow!

a lot of activity will happen at leauge clubs between today and the window shutting 2mora,always does. but with stoke you always expect them to stay silent because we all know we are blown out of the water at the last minute,or deals fall through

"No Loan Deal Imminent"
Sorry, not what i want to hear right now Mr Kemp.
"We are busting our balls to get Kamara in, and failing him, Jason Roberts and failing him, Healey..."
He added: "We will get a quality finisher by 5pm tomorrow. End of."
would be a damn sight more like it quite honestly Mr Kemp.
It's as clear as day we need a striker anyway & especially while Fuller is out.
Get the fook on with it & ditch all the coy "maybe's" eh?

To me , its not good enough , yes in January deals can be struck late on as players realise they will be warming their arses for another 4 months but now we are 6 weeks away from their holidays and most may see it as a nice 6 weeks rest. We need a finisher and another midfielder if we can possibly do that and we need them NOW.

"Loan Deal Imminent"
"We are busting our balls to get Kamara in, and failing him, Jason Roberts and failing him, Healey..." "We will get a quality finisher by 5pm tomorrow. End of." That'd do the trick, rsb. Don't they send 'em on 'dealing with the media' courses these days? ;D

Grapey:
Sadly i think he probably has been on some media training course - just the wrong one.
One where they teach them to down play everything & then everything's a bonus if it happens type of thing.
Fook that, they are 'real footie blowks' & should tell it like it is.
So on the basis that is what they are doing (we all hope & pray), then jolly well say so.
(Minor) rant over. ;D

classic PR tactic... Designed to swing agents into action before they lose out on another pay day... As pointed out higher up, if they had gone out and said we are in for a, b,c and d player, they would probably get thru this agent road bloack a bit quicker as a beauty parade of one can always be a of tricky negotation if your wallet is half full..!!

You are not allowed to fill rooms with smoke anymore. It'll be all lemon tea and pot-pourri
