England's burly (well wide at least) most capped keeper played over 100 games for the Potters during the mid/late 70's. Strange he never really endeared himself the Stoke faithfull. Perhaps because his time at Stoke coincided with our fall from grace. He joined the all-star team of Greenhoff, Hurst, Hudson and Salmons which missed out on the title by only 4 points in 74/75. But was part of the side relegated in 76/77 the season Waddington was hounded out of the club. He finally departed for Euro Champs Forest 3 games in to the 77/78 Div 2 season. Someone help me with this picture. Is this at Burnley and is the forward with the comb over arrangment (very popular around this time !) Noble ? Also who is the Stoke defender - Bowers/Skeels even ?! Finally, did I dream it or did Shilton once appear in a Bullworker advert ?

Dont think its Skeels or Bowers - I think its Simon Amstell's dad making his one and only Potters appearance

Yes, its Ralph Coates (the poor mans Bobby Charlton) and its definately Erker Skeels, dont know about Shilton/bullworker, but I do remember the report about Shilton crashing his Jag' as he tried to drive off with his trousers around his ankles after being caught inflagrento delicato with someones wife!! sometimes he played like they were still round his ankles!!

Apparently (according to the Gospel of my step father) Shilton was not endeared to the Stoke fans because when he arrived he started playing billy big bollocks, not willing to fight for Stoke and generally couldn't be arsed. He cut about with a "I'm a superstar and too big for Stoke" attitude amd was generally an arse. We already had an adequate (and in some quarters a better) goalkeeper when Banksie was "lost" to us in the form of Farmer (am I right?). Funny how when he went to forest who were a "bigger" club he suddenly became a small fish and started actually giving a shit!

Would agree with what GS says above, but would also add that Shilton would never have been popular because he simply wasn't Banks (who without a doubt is the greatest keeper of all time)
Or so the wise elders in my family say

Thank you Percy, thought it was Peter Noble not Ralph Coates. Coates would have been at Spurs not Burnley at this time anyway. Those comb overs would have been a winner in the night club in the evening but came up well short on a wet and windy day on a football pitch right ?

Peter Noble and Eric Skeels it was indeed. Shilton got caught in a Mini with his pants down, I believe the lady's name was Tina

Deffo Eric, had the pleasure of his hospitality when he ran the Noahs Ark Hartshill in the late '80's/ possibly early '90's. Am sure he holds the record of appearences for the club, really nice guy too..... was great when you were invited to watch a video ( in those days really really cutting edge) of the '72 cup final after hours on a telly upstairs in the pub, for me, a real unsung hero.

Shitters was a crap keeper for us. He was bloody hopeless on crosses. Should've stuck with Johnny Farmer.

Shilton's attitude was his downfall at Stoke. Not much has changed within the confines of this great club. Players that sign here and don't put in are always going to cop it. Pulis last week put all the 'new stars' on notice by saying exactly that in the press. We like our flashy players. We like skill and we like showmen. But we love effort, we love feeling part of the team, and we are very patriotic and supportive of players that give everything. Stoke City FC fits the profile of a street fight with baseball bats. Shilton fitted the profile of a Frenchman with a fencing sword. That's why.

If the Shilton money had gone on a replacement for John Ritchie it would have been better. Shilton had some nightmares for us. Although I remember him saving a penno against Villa in 1976 when we beat them 1-0.

Also hated him because he thought he was better than Mr Gordon Banks, and for that alone he is a dick head and oh he let a man half his height out jump him in 1986 and oh he was like a flying pig on those penalties in 1990.
