Since signing our first £1million player almost 3 years ago, I think that Wilson must be our 20th £1million + signing: Apologies for the spelling: 1 Begovic £3m 2 Cort £1m 3 Shawcross £2m 4 Faye £2m 5 Huth £5m 6 Higgy £2m 7 Collins £2m 8 Davies £1m 9 Wilson £5m 10 Ethers £3m 11 Whitehead £4m 12 Oly £3m 13 Deigo £2 14 Kitson £5 15 Tuncay £5m 16 Tongue £2m 17 Sonko £2m 18 Soares £2m 19 KJ £8m 20 Walters £3m
~£62million!

Bloody hell.
Never would've imagined that on that opening Saturday at Southend four years ago.

Amazing when you see it written down like that.
Especially when you think Gunnarsson was our record as recently as 99, and it was still Bangoura as recently as 07, at less than £1m!
Did we pay £1m for Amdy Faye as well, or was that undisclosed?

Good question re first sale of over a mill. Don't think the late 80s sales, like Beagrie, reached that figure, so I reckon it was Mark Stein to Chelsea 1.5m.

Whilst that list is missing BT, Amdy Faye and now Eidur, it still shows that Tone splashed some decent cash on some absolute shockers when we first got promoted - Oli, Kits, Davies, Soares, Sonko and, to date, Diego. Since then, only Collins to me, of the million plus club, can be marked out as a rank bad buy. No wonder he is now a bit more careful with Uncle Pete's spondoolies!!

Yep, forgot to add that it was £1m plus signings who didn't have fights with TP over X-mas parties . Yep Bt slipped my mind. Didn't we get Amdy on a free as we took over his very high wages. Eidur I excluded as he's on loan.

Eidur is a permanent deal, 1 year contract, supposed to be around £2m

£60 million ish is a lot of money but given that it covers virtually three summer transfer windows and two winter ones, it is only just over £20 million per year - and clubs would expect to spend that much in the early years of the Prem. Hopefully, from now on, we'll have some decent income from sales of players to offset some of the purchases - not including Ryan of course!

It would be interesting to see what is the record amount received for a player in real terms. Obviously the fee received for big john is small by today's standards but in 1966 £70,000 was a massive amount of money.
My mum and dad brought their first house in 1967 for £1,400 it was sold 2 years ago for £110,000. if you add that equation to the fee would Big Johns fee be 60 times the £70k in toady's money?

£600k for Crooks was big money for the time. Not bad I suppose, but don't forget T. Francis went to Forest for 1 million and Andy Gray went to Wolves shortly after for 1.5 million.

A lot of money sure but put in context against where we have come from. I remember this www.stokecityfc.com/page/MatchReport/0,,10310~29910,00.html five years ago and thinking 'Bloodyhell, this Junior fucker looks good.' TP always excelled in the transfer market aside from a few duds (stand up - if you can - Paul Williams) and hasn't done too bad for us here. Take that list back five years and tell a Stoke fan that we're in the PL for the third year running having signed Kitson (don't say he was shit, it would just be upsetting) and 'Champions League hattrick scorer' Tuncay and I'm pretty sure they would soil themselves with excitement.
