You'll have to change at Derby, Stockport or Manchester.
Station is about 3 miles from the ground, you can get the Supertram (yellow route towards Middlewood Road, exit Leppings Lane).
By bus you can get either the 53, 77 or 80 from Flat Street bus station (quick walk from train station), they run every 15 mins or so.

Leave the Station by the back entrance which takes you straight to the tram stop and you'll pay about £3 for a return ticket on the tram which run around every 20 minutes. You'll have to change trams at the Fitzalan Square/Ponds Forge, Castle Square or The Cathedral stops (these are the first 3 after you borad at the interchange) for the tram to Hillsborough Stadium The journey is around 20 minutes I'd say on the tram and get off at Leppings Lane which is then a one minute walk down the hill to the away turnstiles (passing a good chippy that does a few good offers including small fish, chips and peas and a sausage for something like £2.80)

the cheapest way for us last years was to go from stoke to derby, (GET A RETURN TICKET) then from derby to sheffield, and get a return ticket, make sure you get 2 return tickets, its cheaper to do it that way than buy a ticket from stoke to sheffield

It might be quicker to jump in a taxi outside the station and ask the driver to head for Division Street or West Street (which run parallel to each other) and that should cost you a fiver at the very most and here you'll find lots of pubs and the trams run up West Street to the ground.

We have done it the way Nickstokefc said, its only cost us £15. We got them off the net(trainsonline). Got the tickets the next day. Think its £26 via Stockport

if you come out of the station then directly opposite is the sheffield interchange. From here you can catch the bus up Hillsborough way. Although I wouldn't reccomend this. When you come out of the station, turn right towards a big roundabout with a blue bridge going across it. If you look to the left of it there is a large sports centre called ponds forge. Turn left up Commercial Street (the road which has ponds forge on and the tramline) which runs into High Street when the road becomes one way. Basically follow the tramline.
Follow the road up past TJ Hughes, Fitzalan Square/Ponds Forge tram stop and Castle Square tram stop. Bear left after McDonalds up the pedestrianised street. This road is called Fargate and is just a few metres before Cathedral tram stop. If you follow Fargate to the top you will come to GAP. Cross the road and go up the street with the red framed TK Maxx and John Lewis at the top. This street is called Barker's Pool. When you approach the square there is Sheffield City Hall to the right of you. Directly infront of you is RSVP bar, and ASK italian restaurnat. If you want a decent bite then ASK is the place to go. Around this area is Lloyds No.1 bar.
If you go back down Fargate to McDonalds and TJ Hughes then you can catch the bus up to Hillsborough or the Tram. You will need the Yellow Route service to Middlewood. Don't catch the Blue Route service to Malin Bridge because this doesn't go far enough. Supertram usually put on a football special service which goes directly to Leppings Lane which is a minutes walk from the away end.
Be careful on Middlewood Road and Pensitone Road as there has been trouble on there before with Stoke fans.

Be careful on Middlewood Road and Pensitone Road as there has been trouble on there before with Stoke fans. That routes taking you round the houses mate, like I said just walk out of the main station entrance, up the new steps (with waterfall), across a road passing the Howard Hotel public house on your right, carry on walking past the Roebuck (pub) on your left and you'll come to another road, cross this and up the walkway to your right which will bring you to the Sheffield library on your right or more importantly The Graduate (pub) on your left. Another 200 yards and that brings you to the top of Fargate where if you turn left you'll pass the City hall on your right and come to what is called Division Street where the bars Lloyds, R.S.V.P, Yates are within 50 yards of each other with a Weatherspoons down the side street from R.S.V.P. If you get upto Yates then turn right up to Walkabout which is a converted church. If you keep on walking past Walkabout (on your left) then you'll come to West Street with pubs like Bedroom, Varsity, The Cavendish, and loads more and here you'll also be able to board the tram.

yeah, it is much shorter, but the way I described would be more simple for someone who isn't as familiar with sheffield as its sticking to the main drag.

Most of the pubs up towards Hillsborough are mostly 'Home Fans Only' and besides, they're generally a bit crap anyway...
Your best bet if you're going by train is to walk into town - straight out of the station entrance, up past the big stainless-steel wall water feature thing, across the road and into town (although this said, the old bill are usually on hand to scoop up any away fans and put them in 'The Howard' opposite the station, not a bad boozer but there is better in town).
West St. and Division St. have a load of pubs (Frog & Parrot is good) as well as a few takeaways/chippy etc.
Although it is miles away from Hillsborough, you can get the yellow tram outside Sheffield University straight up to the ground for about £2.50 return (although you'll probably get away with not paying).
The Harley at the top of West St. is right next to the tram stop and is also a decent pub.

If you go in the Frog & Parrot then try a bottle of 'Roger and Out' which is brewed locally and was at one point the strongest beer in the world but if there is a group of you only buy one bottle, otherwise most of you will have wasted your money. The Frog & Parrot www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/60/6009/Frog_and_Parrot/SheffieldYou used to get a certificate for drinking a pint of the stuff but don't think that happens anymore. You've also got The Common Room across the road which is a pub / pool room with about 10 tables and a large bar area. The Common Room Details www.sheffieldpub.co.uk/pubs/city-centre/common-room/I can also recommend The Devonshire Cat which is just round the corner from here and has a vast range of guest beers on draught for the seasoned Bitter drinker and then 100's of different bottled beers from around the world.
