The blueprint for a successful football team has been set down for many a year. Defence - Solid with fullbacks who can get forward. Midfield, a playmaker and a holding player, with two men wide with pace, who can cross the ball. Forward line a big man with pace who can head a ball, and a smaller pacey player with an eye for goal.
How do Stoke match up to this blueprint.
Defence - Good, fullbacks can get forward, and centrehalves good and do score goals..
Midfield -centre not bad, playmaker could be Whelan with plenty of options for holding player. Right side sorted with Lawrence, but why no attempt to sort out the left side. We need someone who can take a player on. As it is the forwards always getting the ball when they have their backs to goal or closely marked. Forward line Fuller doesn't fit into this category as he is a total maverick. But we do still need a partner, Bothroyd?
I don't think we are that far off a good side who could play better football, but to me a lot of it hinges on Pulis's attitude to the midfield, he only plays players who are defence minded and don't push on.

He won't ALLOW Whelan to be playmaker. That's the problem. We've got the players (except for a pacy left sider) but Pulis simply won't allow them to play!
