Mark Higgins. We had a much fraught night in the pub when several of us hadn't a fucking Scooby who this bloke was on about in the pub. Trouble is, the bloke in the pub couldn't even remember the player in question's name either, such was his astounding non impact. Just knew that he thought it was under Mick Mills and that he looked the part, but got roughed up in a couple of challenges in his first game and didn't want to know from then on, particularly in case he messed his hair up. Apparently he retired from playing not long after his brief Stoke career. Then the blokes Eureka moment "Mark Higgins, thats who it was!" Met with general frowns, squinting, casting of hands in the air and shrugs of shoulders as none of us could recall this fella at all. And I remember Hockaday, Allan 'Tyson' Smart, Tosh McKinlay, Sean Flynn, Mark McNally and Paul Holsgrove. And they did fuck all too! FFS....

I know a player, a mate of mine who was in the same class in the mid seventies, was nephew or a cousin. Talked about about him alot at school for a year, I think I saw him play for the Stoke first team, saw him play for the reserves. Didn't know his first name but they used to to call him Thugger Thorley. I don't know why this name sticks with me, it was 34 years ago As anybody else got any recollection of once great Stoke player? [/quote Cyprus, I think the player you are referring to is Dennis Thorley, I seem to remember him being a reserve player who made a few 1st team appearances but was never a regular.

Am I also right in thinking that during the Joe Jordan era we had a player on trial from Africa with a name like Prince Polly?

Sadly Dr Oetcake, you do have memory (albeit nightmarish ones) of Gordon Marshall, because you sat next to me at the home game against Oxford Utd!
Alan Biley anyone? Thought I'd made it up, but he played 8 games for us in '81-'82. Despite the mullet-haired pikey appearance, he was a prolific goalscorer for everybody he played for except us!!

Mark Higgins played for Everton before joining us (there may have been other clubs in between). At the time (if I remember rightly) we were desperate for a centre half and despite being under an injury cloud, we signed him...

Wish I didn't though. Reminded me in later years of Ade Edmondson as Alan Metcalfe in 'Bad News'

Are there any players who you know have played for us during your Stoke-supporting lifetime, but you just can't summon any memories of? I've been going to Stoke since about 1986 - I can remember players like (for example) Mickey Gynn, Peter Beagrie, Peter Fox, Justin Whittle, Vinnie Overson and Toddy. But I have absolutely no memory at all of Keith Scott. I can't remember him signing, leaving, being crap, ever seeing him play or even what he looked like. He was replaced by Sheron, and I can remember almost every minute of him being on the pitch... It can't just be because he was crap - I remember plenty other crap players from that era! Anyone else suffer this kind of player amnesia? Yes, I'm recovering from my amnesia The players are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. My 81 year old dad has a list 100 times longer than this ???

How about Junior Bent and Davide Xausa, you did well if you saw these guys play as I think i am right in saying they both only had 1 game each which was away. Another one was Brett Williams I cant remember him playing a home match.

correct...punched an Oldham player, then went on to sign for them not long after! wasnt it just before kick off aswell? i seem to remember it taking place in the half of the pitch closest to the away end, which means it must have been during the first half as we were shooting towards that goal. i think it was an off the ball incident or maybe a reaction to a tackle, my memory of it is very vague!

It was actually his 2nd game for us, his 1st was a 6-1 loss at Wigan. He was sent off with about 5 minutes left for hitting I think John Sheridan (which in my opinion should have not been an offense)

Edit: just checked on Wiki and he did indeed play two games for us. if it was the wigan game i have no recollection of him being on the pitch that night at all!

Yes they were both midweek games, we had an Fa cup match in between on the Saturday a very exciting 2-0 "away" game at the Brit against Lewes which he was ineligable for. The Wigan game he also came on as sub, at half time.
