In theory I am practising Buddhist with no time for theistic world views HOWEVER in times of crisis, danger or transcedent opportunity I do revert to primeval instinct and feel the need to invoke the Divine in a rather direct and personal fashion.
With seven games to go and automatic promotion there if we can grit our teeth and play to 80% of our best - this is most assuredly one of those times.
Thus allow me to lead the congregration of Stoke City in a few words of sincere supplication to that which I will call .... for the sake of convenience (and without prejudice to your own concepts in relation to the ultimate & unknowable) ..... the Allmighty.
God Allmighty
Just do it for us.
Please.
Just fucking do it.
Amen.

I doubt it unfortunately - with or without my profanities I would hope that in a world of infinite suffering Himself was busy with higher priorities. Our fate is in the hands of 11 daft lads come Saturday 3.00pm. Go on Stoke.

Whats more important than Stoke getting promoted ;D The big man has had forever to sort the worlds problems out all we need is his attention for what would be in his lifetime a millionth of a grain of sand in the big hour glass in the sky

I'll take all the help we can get but since the Big 'Un is technically outside time & space and thus infinite his relation to any issue within time & space is therefore immeasurable so to suggest that the comparative minimality of our present concerns is in fact an incentive for His Grace to become manifest in our favour is of course theologically insupportable youth.

I have to say Auntie Ruth, your obvious grasp on theology has rewarded you indeed, with 9 karmas from 11 posts, surely a strike rate Mike Sheron would have been proud of, perhaps the teachings of the Lord Buddha might offer us some support or guidance on our search for Nirvana come early may...?

As you may know the Buddha preached the Middle Way. Neither extremities of utter self denial nor flagrant hedonism will do the trick. but a psychologically sound & skillful cultivation of awareness, appreciation and compassion. Translated into modern day football parlance that means we should not ne sitting back to protect 1-0 leads but not getting silly in pursuit of unrealistic 4 or 5 nils. As for Nirvana, I prefer to think of enlightenment not Enlightnment, if we are granted the experience of 'The Premiership' let us accept it for what it will be.

So the Lord Budhha would be in favour of mid-table consolidation, certainly in the first season up...

There are people on this message board who regularly claim that Pulis is God.
Is this prayer or profanity?

I can confirm this - not only the historical Buddha but all Buddhas, in the past, the future, and in all possible Universes would smile with transcendent joy upon a Premiership mid-table Stoke finish next season. The fact that they would do the same over a similar outcome for Brazil, Bristol or Watford, in fact any other team you care to mention, is an irritating detail I will not dwell on right now.

The Question is, once God has granted our wish and we are in the premiership, will any of us stop for a moment to thank Him?

A wise thread indeed and worthy of karma to its originator. Aunty, may you be reincarnated as a thirty goal a season Stoke striker.

Goboks - I think that you know the answer already. We will take it for granted. Lose two games in a row and it will be Coates Out, Pulis Out and the whole inevitable pantomime. Human beings (and the good hearted but rather simple people of Stoke on Trent inparticular) are at a very early stage in their psychological evolution. Our species has become self aware for but a wink of time in comparison with the organic process which has got us here. Mentally speaking we are still staggering about with the shock of it all so I don't expect anything but the most childish behaviour at the best of times. A few amongst us will witness this and weep, not with anger, but with love.

I just hope our prayers are answered after so many disappointments , I live around and also work with many Derby fans and am fed up of their constant harking on about us never being in the Premiership and we are not a big enough club to go up because of our poor support. I would love it if we went up and they come down with the worst ever points record for the top flight . Come on Stoke Make my Day

It has nowt to do with prayer, God, Buddah or the like.
It's down to my lucky hat and if I can hum all in one breath from the time the ref gives them a corner to the time the ball is crossed in! They have never scored if I am still in mid-hum.

Absolutely. In it's lowest form the technique that you employ is a shamanic device well known amongst Tibetan healers & exorcists with roots in the pre-Buddhist Bon religion. Of course this art was transformed within the Buddha dharma into Mantric Sound, used not for some mundane worldly end but to open the gateways to the Beyond. Your natural, instinctive appreciation of these capabilities marks you out as an individual with at least one foot firmly in the realm of devas (that means semi-divine beings). Use your powers wisely my friend, I am glad to make your acquaintance in these times. May I venture to enquire as to the colour & design of this totem you call your 'magic hat'?
