I'm looking to buy my first car and I was wondering what model is best, e.g. mpg, engine size, looks, etc. I want preferably, a Peugeot 206 or a Renault Clio, would anyone on here recommend either? Cheers

Hey tom, as you probs know my first car was a 1.25 Ford Fiesta in white (1996 version). Id recommend going for something cheap but reliable for starters, save up your cash for a good car after a year / two of no claims. Scout around all the car dealers in the area, get valuations and haggle . Also check autotrader.co.uk. Be aware of rust on older cars too. Whats your budget like?

Yeah i'm playing tomorrow . Take your time when trying get a car anyway, one lesson i learned was don't rush into buying a car you like due to appearance there are hidden abnormalities such as rust . Oh yeah what time does the cup start?

You wont get a 206 or a clio until you at least double that price, it might be worth you buying a corsa, there are plenty cheap ones available with good mileage etc.

you wont get a 206 for £1000 unless there is osmeting wrong with it (cheapest i found was £1,450) and with the clio you could get the older type model (box sort of shape)

Insurance premiums are the biggest factor...1.0 L are obviously the most attractive.
Secondly, buy what's reliable and cheap to repair.
Don't spend more than £1500 on your first car as you are more than likely to prang it.
Citroen Peugeot Nissan and Ford are all quite dependable.
Last but not least...NEVER buy from a garage...ALWAYS buy from an auction and take someone who knows a bit about cars.
I bought a 52 plate diesel Berlingo tonight for £1950 with 62,000 miles on the clock.
I could sell it tomorrow for £2950.

seriously,
stay away from clios.
never owned one myself but that is down to the fact i've had a few family members and friends that have had endless problems with them. central locking being one of the biggest pain in the arse.
hav eto agree that you can't go wrong with a corsa or fiesta. i know they're boring but worry bout having a nice car when you have the first 2or3 years out the way.

Denty, few questions for you mate:
1. How old are you? 2. Whats your total budget INCLUDING insurance? 3. Do you have a full time regular income or are you a student etc?
If you are under 21 and a student then I'd strongly advise getting a small engined car, certainly no higher than 1.4 petrol. Insurance in your first year is insane, usually £1,200 at the very least if you're under 21 and thats on a 1 litre car.
And the reason I bring income into it is because if you have a full time income you can choose to pay your insurance monthly which could mean you can afford to spend more of your budget on the car itself. If you're a student though you won't have a regular income so this wouldn't be a good idea, you're best just paying your insurance all in one go and get a cheaper car.

Get yourself an old mazda 323. I've got one it's my first car it cost me £500 and it just keeps going.
No point in spending big on cars (imo) if i had ten grand to spend i'd probably buy a fleet of bangers then tax and insure em with the change. ;D

i've been told in the past by several pretty infulencial people that toyotas are painless cars to run as first vehicles. (never break down, sensible componant costs, no need really to annually service just fix stuff as its found in the annual mot). take a look at one of the lower 1.0 - 1.4 vehicles and make sure you do a comparision online for the insurance otherwise you'll be paying over the odds. good luck mate.

You may be able to get yourself into a Nissan Micra or perhaps a high mileage Toyota Yaris - both solid and reliable May not do much for your street cred but you'll get over it
