As a player Maradona was a genius. A flawed genius but a genius all the same. However, I look forward to the day I can meet someone who has no flaws. He took drugs yes but nobody's perfect. Despite many of us loving pints and revelling in laddishness are we pretending to be appalled by that?
Maradona first pissed FIFA off in the build up to 1986 when he made public his disgust at midday Kick offs to suit European TV. He accused FIFA of damaging the quality of football on offer for the sake of the dollars. Havelange blew a fuse when he found out Maradona had "Dared to question me" Compare this to Pele who would suck any corporations cock and agree to anything as long as there's a few hundred grand in it.
Most importantly, when Maradona had the ball at his feet football entered the realm of magic. As a manager he's a mentalist. But a funny mentalist.

I like him. I don't remember anything about the '86 World Cup and couldn't really give a shit about it or anything that happened therein.
His second goal against England was the most overrated goal of all time ever though.

Most are with me then, so its a collective shout of come on you krauts! :-)
As for his second goal against england, no way would he have scored that if the referee hadn't given him licence to think he could get away with blatant cheating, and could walk on water as if he was god himself.
we were robbed - simple.

Butcher and Hodge both admitted they tried to hack him but ciouldn't get near to him.
How did he score the second because of the ref letting him cheat?
1986 was the start of the phase of England getting knocked out and blaming everyone but themselves.

Also no way would he have scored it if it wasn't Peter'Panting Dog' Reid aimlessly chasing him as opposed to someone with a modicum of pace. I'm still convinced to this day it was a Terry Butcher own goal anyway.

I've never had a problem with Maradona. In fact I think he's ace. This. I grew up watching Maradona in his prime and i don't think i ever missed a minute of him playing when he was on TV. In my opinion the best player ever to have played the game and nobody else has even come close. Before the handball and the drug abuse ending he played the game the right way, never dived or went down easy, would run through brick walls to win and for youngsters watching the game was a true inspiration. An absolute hero of mine and i too really hope that they go on to win it. A true legend.

Good player, entertaining as a manager, and I would agree with those who've said he didn't dive and at the start was a good role model for younger players. He cheated on the biggest stage of all though, with his handball and then taking drugs. Greatest player of all time? Well, if we're talking about talented footballers, who are model professionals, and generally good human beings, then; there's your man

England needs some spirit and less EPL superstars youngsters like shawcross and walcott who want to make a name for themselves ala the germans and swiss this year.

I've really enjoyed the Argies in this world cup. Maradona is a cheat, a wanker and a mentalist. He's also the greatest player who ever lived. Agreed!

I'm glad england aren't playing the argies, because they would have ripped our excuse for a defence into tiny pieces and watching that twatter strutting up and down the touchline each time they scored would have been too much.
I hope the germans kick them off the park

American here, I disliked the guy before the HoG goal and I still can't stand the site of him. Still his second goal in that game is fucking ace and the Argies were always going to win that game not matter what.

How does that work then fella? ;D I'm not old enough for Pele so i wouldn't be so bold but i'll tell you he was in a different league to Platini even though he was a special talent aswell.

I'm too young to remember '86 and don't really recall seeing anything of Maradona's career so never had the pleasure of seeing him as a player.
As a manager he's been fairly entertaining and whilst I don't usually agree with people becoming popular on the basis of being 'a character', he's certainly given me a few laughs and is doing a decent job with the Argies.
From my perspective I don't really have anything to forgive him for.

Beardy - 'I never missed a minute of him playing when he was on TV'
Often the justification used by Gloryhunters when supporting their despicable behaviour.
As for playing the game in the right way. Is this conveniently forgetting him pushing the ref and having to be restrained at the end of the 1990 World Cup Final?
Let's see what his reaction is if (hopefully when) the cheating, druggie midget gets eliminated.

Beardy - 'I never missed a minute of him playing when he was on TV' Often the justification used by Gloryhunters when supporting their despicable behaviour. What has that got to do with anything? At about 14 years of age did you expect me to have a Barcelona or Napoli season ticket? ;D What i was saying is that even though i had no connection to him in team or nationality i would go out of my way to make every effort to watch every minute i could as he was so good. No player before or since has ever had the same effect. I also said that before the hand of god and the drug abuse ending he played the game the right way and you bring up an example of something 4 years later.

He was and is a legend. All this talk about cheating is narrow-minded, blinkered, little Englander bullshit, especially considering our only World Cup win was based on a goal that wasn't. Maradona's achievements in football are second to none and if he gets Argentina to win this world cup, as I've said before, he will ascend directly from the turf into heaven.

Forgiven him, because players have done what he did since the game has been in existence, I remember after we pulled one back lineker then went diving in head first on the Argie line at a cross, I thought at the time he should have punched it in he would have got away with it as it happened so quickly.
I have,nt forgiven Shilton who should have cleaned him out, or the Ref and linesman who should have seen it though.

RAF, if the Germans had won the war we'd have:
a better anthem a better economy better cities better footbal team <winky>
But this thread sums up the small-mindedness and petty parochialism for me. We still go on about the war (65 years ago) as though it actually made this country the nirvana it is now. Whilst we basked in the glory of nailing Fritz, Germany quietly got on with rebuilding what is now one of the best countries anywhere.
Go on your hols to the med. I know who I'd prefer in the next room to me, germans or British. Yet, we did win the war didn't we?
It's 2010 folks. Germany evolved and Maradona has too. What he did rankled at the time but I remember him nore for being the greatest player I've ever clapped eyes on and single-handedly (sic) won the World Cup.
I hope they win it and show our national team and FA up as the total bunch of weapons they truly are.
