Would we have done any worse if we'd had: Sharcross for Upsom, Wilko for Johnston Whitehead doing the holding role instead of Barry going AWOL and getting beaten for pace worse than any professional footballer I've ever seen. Etherington for Milner/Garard - at least giving us some pace, defensive cover (cf. SWP & Lennon) and the ability to hold the ball.

No. Is Upson a better defender than Shawcross? Is Wilko a better defender than Johnson? Is Whitehead a better holding midfielder than Barry? Go on, answer those then. So what if I got some of the spelling of the names wrong

No, No and No. There you go. Anybody who thinks Glen Johnson is a better defender than Wilko must be pissed. Going forwards I'll grant you, but defending? Really?

Yes, really. Glen Johnson isn't a terrible defender. That's why he plays for England & Liverpool at the top level.
Upson had a great start to the season and his lack of pace showed him up yesterday but Terry and James aren't blameless for the goals either.
As for Whitehead and Barry - No comparison really.

Shawcross WILL BE a better defender Johnson is a better PLAYER than Wilki Barry IS a better holding mid than Whitehead. Upson has been better, but on the last season's form (even at the admission of a WHU season ticket holder) - he has been truly awful. Johnson is a better player, but not defensively better than Wilko? Not a chance. And remind me where Johnson was playing. I'll give you Barry vs. Whitehead. My point is that in the destructive defense protecting role, that Whitehead is more disciplined than Barry (at least on yesterday's showing).

upson and shawcross are on par with eachother at the momment and if ryan keeps on progressing like he is he will become better.
johnson is a better right back than wilko he has pace dosent go in as hard as wilko so therfore less likely going to get sent off and can get forward allot quicker and better than wilko.
barry is just simply better the whitehead.
were out of the world cup now so its all ifs and buts.

More disciplined doesn't make jhim a better footballer.
Glen Johnson is a good defender, Wilko isn't exactly a world beater in defence and does get caught out himself but the one thing he has got is passion. He would have performed better I think because he would have given it his all however that still doesn't make him a better defender.
Shawcross will be miles better than Upson but he isn't at the moment and looked shakey when he came back at the end of the season. I think if he had gone he would have found it difficult.

. . . . and I think that our very own Higgy is a far better defender than Ashley Cole!

Shawcross WILL BE a better defender Johnson is a better PLAYER than Wilki Barry IS a better holding mid than Whitehead. That should hopefully save a lot of time for everyone. I'm sure Bolton and Wolves fans are saying similar things about their English players on their boards this morning
