Alexi Lalas being a total tosser on ESPN right now. Just said England is nothing more than an above average team and nothing special. What an idiot. One bad result (or two) does not undo the fact that England are easily top ten in the world.

Ehhh, if talking about this particular team at this particular tournament then OK maybe. But he said it in such a way that it sounded like he was talking about the team in general (not just this particular incarnation). To me it sounded like 20 years of inferiority complex boiling over.

People mock Beckham but he'd show more passion, commitment and a btter quality touch and pass than any of these. Amen

The way he said it came off (to me, at least) like he was saying England would never rate and never threaten for a WC. He said something like "Once again, delusions of grandeur".

And yet time and time again we never threaten for a world cup. And yet again we have delusions of grandeur.

I just think that what is happening in football is that a lot of the historically lesser teams a catching up and the margin is slimmer than it was twenty years ago or so. The same thing happened in basketball where we (the US) just assumed that we would win the Olympics every time. But the rest of the world caught up. As for the current team/tournament. I'd say you (England) are still a threat to win it. The last two games have been poor but FFS look at Italy last time. You have the players that, if you get hot, you could go very deep. Just my opinion.

Well there's always 2014. Rooney might have been killed by a Man City fan by then so we could stand a chance of getting a decent striker.

He thinks the USA are the best team at the WC and really believes he knows more about football than the other pundits on ESPN.

For someone like me, who has followed and loved English football for 40 years, it saddens me to see a performance like last nights. Where's the passion and commitment? I don't buy into the theory that it's the money of the Premier League that has corrupted the players - our players at Stoke show passion and commitment. England needs to drop the continental approach and get more of the old blood & thunder back.

This bunch of overpaid, overated gobshites are nothing but average players at best. Yes they look good when at their clubs, but most, if not all are getting carried by overseas players most of the time. The sycophantic press will be calling them world glass again next season. Has for Rooney, how dare he slag off fans who have paid good money to watch that shower of wank? Roll on 2066, we may have a good chance of winning it by then.
