would improve dramatically if the fa fast tracked ex players through the courses up to league level
not talking bout your mega stars who wouldnt lower themselves but honest hardworking journeymen pros from the lower leagues

salop - great in theory, but how soon would it be before a "megastar", or his manager, insisted the journeyman knew nothing about playing at a higher level?
The real problems with refereeing standards are many.
Cheating divers. Cheating managers. The refusal to use technology to assist referees in what's become a much faster game than even 20 years ago, let alone 100. Confusing laws (offside in particular). Trial by TV.
Now if you add all those (and I'm sure you could think of a few more) to the small number of referees who think we pay to watch them instead of the team, then it all adds up to a very frustrating afternoon at times for the fans.
