Just been on the BBC website watching some footage of the Italia 90 World Cup and Gazza's tears. I can't believe that was 20 years ago. I was 20 back then and watched that semi final in Yates's seems like only a few years back - how time flies news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8672299.stm

Jesus, 20 years!!!
It seems like yesterday. I remember a couple of car loads of us going to Luton to see the players come home that was a brill day, God knows what it'd be like if we won the bloody thing!
The Italia 90 is one of my favourite ever world cups and it converted lots of people to footy too. When Gazza cried I think half the English nation either joined him or were bloody close to it!

I was on a mobile radar detachment in Thetford Forest. It had just ceased for the day when we managed to get back to the bar just for the semi-finals. I was fucking gutted, for at least 20 mins until we found out it was stripper night. Certainly helped us get over what was definitely our best chance of winning the world cup since 66, because we would have beaten Argentina no doubt.

Was in the Mitch Club Trent Vegas, we had the best team. We played well and when we lost the disappointment was immense. It remains my favorite World Cup ever. Still love that Pavarotti song, and whenever I hear it I think about that match.

Not many people realise that if Waddles shot what hit the post had gone in it wouldn't have counted.

Both of them actually. But I was thinking of the one that hit the post in ET

Was at that World Cup amongst others. Personally I remember thinking what a girl's blouse he was. Had a real good tournament but is best remembered for bloody crying.

At the time it felt as if the naighty German had dived and cheated. Watching it a couple of years later the yellow card didn't seem so harsh.

Was a stupid tackle, Joe. Let's be honest, he wasn't blessed with much in the brains department and was no need for it. Did feel the same at the time but any player with the slightest bit of common sense wouldn't have launched into that challenge........Gascoigne doesn't fit that category though.
Was a strange tournament for England.............the group was really lacking in good football, not a decent game in it. Belgium some said they were lucky but many forget that the Jamaican bloke on the wing had a perfectly good goal ruled out in normal time. The Cameroon game was a cracker but their naivety and inability to tackle below the neck let them down.

There was a thread on here a couple of weeks ago about the new film "One night in Turin". It's all about the 1990 World Cup, with both news footage and football highlights. It's absolutely fantastic and very nostalgic. There is also a book with the same name, which is an excellent read but it is simply a re-branded version of the original, which was called "All played out" (Pete Davies). I would recommend both but especially the book for a great holiday read.

I watched the game in the roebuck in Shelton.
I couldn't believe we lost. it took about 5 minutes to sink in then I just cried like a baby.
Gaza is a god in my eye's. he may have his troubles but he is the best player I have ever seen pull on the England shirt.

It was without doubt the best world cup ever (I wasnt here in 66) and has not been bettered since. It just simply had everything...World in Motion..Cameroon beating the Argies in the first game...Nesssun Dorma...Roger Milla..Platts goal against Belgium..Toto Sciilllachi..Gazzas tears...Republic of Ireland & Jack Charlton getting to the quarters...Happy days indeed :-)

Mark it was COSTA RICA!!! But you already knew that I suspect! Thing is Gazza blarting is an iconic image but it all overlooks the fact that in that game our players didn't genuinely honestly believe they could win it.

Watched it in Gibraltar, still see it as a stupid tackle that wasn't needed to be made, half way line, just jockey them

Graham Taylor fucked up Gazzas career. Sure he was awesome at euro 96 but it was a very brief return to the spot light. 1991-1996 were dark years for england. It's no surprise that not one england player in the 1990 world cup squad was in the 1998 world cup squad.
Still, Graham Taylors fault.

Nah. What knacdkered Gazza up was that after the Italia 90 blarting he beacame a superstar and instead of making him spend all his energy on nogger Venables encoureaged all the extra curricular bollox....making records and public appearances. He'd still be a mess now but his talent would have the top level medals it merited.

I was in Falklands and listening to semi-final on Falkland Islands Radio. Only a radio station that broadcasts live darts could stop broadcast at full time for a live broadcast from Darwin Settlements annual barn dance ffs. Had to listen to extra time on World Service which, as those who served in Falklands will know, is very sporadic putting ity politely.

I was in Germany in a little town called Celle. When the penalties were ovder just about every bloody German came down to the English areas sounding thier horns and generally pissing us Brits off. Great tournement ruined by that useless flying fooking pig in our goal. We all knew Beasant could save penalties, I shouted ranted and raved at the telly BRING ON BEASANT, oh well he didnt did he

I got a ferry over to France the night before the game. It was packed with lads going over to Turin. I was on my way down to the South of France, where I watched the game in a bar surrounded by Germans. In fairness, they were all pretty good natured, in spite of my shouting at the TV! I have a complete inability to control myself is such situations which is why I never accept tickets in the wrong end at away games!! They even bought me and my girlfriend a few drinks during the penalty shoot out. I was so fed up that I didn't watch the final - just went to the beach instead!
