Going to have a round of golf there with 3 mates on Monday. Anyone got any opinions/views on the place?
This will be our first time on a golf course as well. Any tips?
We've been on the driving range for a few months, so we wont be too woeful i hope!

Playing driving Ranges and then the real thing are very different. Whiston is much improved over the years. A tip. If you miss hit your ball and it only goes a few yards ( head up stuff), put your Club back in your bag re-assess the shot and pick what you think is the right Club. Arthur playing off 6.

Take plenty of balls. It's a bastard running out on the 7th hole and having to run back to the pro shop to buy more.

Holes 6 - 9 are very hard and can reck your card, the 7th is one hell of a long par 4 playing up hill blind you have to be a big hitter to hit that green in 2. The last 3 holes are very nice, and if your brave enough you can go for the green on the 18th.

I managed to hit the 15th green in one, but the 18th is a nightmare. In all the times I played there I still couldnt fathom out how to reach it in one
The third is similar and can be reached over the trees but I would advise to lay up and try and get a par as it is a dodgy green
A pitching wedge should see you master the fourth
Good luck

Of all the courses I've played, I'd say Whiston was my favourite. Challenging without being rock hard and it's got a certain character and charm about it.
Reasonably priced as well!

have fun...keep the jokes going all the way round cos if you start taking it too seriousy you'll f***ing hate the game.
By far the easiest clubs to hit are 3-7 woods off the deck and you'll need em anyway on Whiston.
Always pick out a feature where your ball comes to rest and walk in the staightest line possible to find it. Get distracted or go on a Tuncay style run and it's a gonner.
At the end of the round have a beer and when you get home you'll be asleep in half an hour flat.
If you have a stinker saw two inches off the shaft of your clubs. It won't improve your golf but they'll fit better in your wheelie bin. Da da boom...

I've posted this previously...but it's worth another look.
Post some of your own if you're feeling creative...
Ball Striking
A Richard Hammond - straight down the middle like a rocket then veers off into the rough at the last minute
An Arthur Scargill - a great strike but a poor result
A Kate Winslett - a bit fat but otherwise perfect
A Rodney King - over-clubbed
An O.J. Simpson - somehow got away with it
A Condom - safe but didn't feel real good
A Glen Miller - didn't make it over the water
A Gerry Adams - playing a provisional
A Sally Gunnell - ugly but a good runner
A Paula Radcliffe - not as ugly as a Sally Gunnell but still a good runner
A Bobby Sands - a bit thin
A Princess Grace - should have taken a driver
A Princess Di - shouldn't have taken a driver
A Robin Cook - just died on the hill
Putting
A Dennis Wise - a nasty 5 footer
A Salman Rushdie - an impossible read
A Rock Hudson- thought it was straight, but it wasn't
A Cuban - needed one more revolution
A Douglas Bader - nae legs
Bunker Play
An Adolf Hitler - taking two shots in a bunker
Saddam Hussein - from one bunker straight into another
Yasser Arafat - ugly and in the sand
a few of my own
course hazards
a thomas cook course - costs a fortune, no sand or water in sight
a barrymore hazard - find yourself in the water, it's gonna cost ya
Don't forget the obligatory pop quiz...who sang Big Apple in the 80's etc etc

Cheers guys.
Whats the very latest that you would recommend that we tee off by? We were thinking 2pm, would this be enough time to complete a round?

it's a poor version of Uttoxeter but still good fun, great place to take good divets with your wedge on the back nine.

No tips, that's cheating I played it as part of a golf society a few years back - it's challenging and I really enjoyed it. I would take plenty of stocks of golf balls, though ;D It has the potential to be quite frustrating on that front.

I've never played Whiston but I do play a great amount of golf. I hope you enjoy your first experience of the game proper and keep going back for more.
Just one thing, as newcomers, particularly playing as a four ball, you'll probably be quite slow, so do be aware of other people around you and let anyone you're holding up play through straight away. That way they won't get annoyed at you and you can have a relaxing round without worrying and having to play too fast.
