.... Community service?
Not full time obviously (unless they want to). Should people on the dole offer some of their free time to helping around the City, cleaning it and tidying it up?
The problem with Stoke is it is very grubby. Look at all the towns and you can see that the majority of buildings need a jet washer taking to them and cleaning them. Now I don't think people would volunteer to do this but should people on the dole be asked to give up 5 or 6 hours a week to help clean the city up and make it nicer? Is that fair?
They still get their dole money, they still have time to apply for jobs and look at other options, it would look good on their CV and show they're commitment to future employers and it would get them out the house for a day!
I think it would do wonders for the city and it's image.

They already do. Personally I think it's disgusting that the unemployed should be treated like convicted criminals I bet you'd think differently if it was you who was being made to work with criminals for all the public to see

Long term unemployed should definatley have to do some kind of service to "earn their crust". There seems to be a growning sub-culture that treat the social like a career path

It's giving something back to the community. What community service do they do seeing as you're a man in the know? Is it like i've suggested and generally cleaning up? Would you not agree that Stoke on Trent needs to be cleaned up?

How about offering the unemployed a chance to work? It's slave labour in principle - under the veil of "giving a bit back", and all of that, but why not shift the impact off the unemployed? How about anyone who earns over £100k p/a has to pay more income tax during this difficult time in order to pay for people to be employed to clean up our streets? The big myth purported is that everyone on JSA does not want to work, is lazy...........is, indeed, a scrounger. It's false & it's not fair. There are some, frankly, who do not want to work - but this is a minority and it's awful that some want people to believe that for all of those on JSA community service is the way forward. I see what you're getting at, though, Jermaine

Agree totally, and I think Jones has probably got it right with saying long term unemployed. I think something like this should still be offered to everyone who is unemployed and they can take it on if they want too once they initially start. I think the government should recognise it nationally and reward anyone who goes on the scheme with recognition via a certificate or something that simple. They could also reward employers who take people on who've been on the scheme with a slight cash incentive. This again would encourage uptake from the majority and would help the city a great deal!

Definatley agree with this thread. The problem with a minority of people on the dole is that they have been on it for so long, they dont want to start work again. Introducing a scheme like this would show them the benefits of putting in some hard work for a cash reward, and prehaps make them appreciate earning a living is much better than sitting around waiting for your next jobseekers interview.

some form of service, yes, but not out there with criminals etc.
They are getting benefits so it's not slave labour FFS, and as long as it is not under the minimum wage etc. for the hours they do then yes it's a good idea in principle.

The vast majority of those on JSA have worked, have made National Insurance contributions, have and do pay taxes. It's another myth that needs dispelling. If it were recognised as "community action", if it meant that it would go towards future employment, employers of such volunteers get financial incentives (i.e. National Insurance holiday for the first 2 years of employment - doesn't this already happen?) then this could work. The simple solution is to tax high income earners more and then redistribute the money downwards to employ people to do such jobs. It gets them off JSA, your streets get cleaned, and those earning the most can still live relatively comfortably whilst those at the bottom get community-based jobs. Has anyone else been listening to Mark Thomas's "People's Manifesto"?? ;D Great idea.

To be honest, I didn't mean for it to be with Criminals and the like and was unaware that they already did this. It would be good for them to give something to the community though and I think if the government could support it and give it a fancy doo dah name like they normally come up with then it could well be an opportunity for cities like ours to really become more attractive and appeal to investors from outside! If they were to support it and provide some tangible recognition for the scheme and the people on it then I do believe it would hold value. I also think they should look to work with employers so that the scheme does hold value with them as well. I remember last year or the year before there was a thread about the state of the city and the fact that it was dirty, messy and ugly and if it stays this way then no one will want to invest anyway!

Stoke on Trent is a shithole at the moment, but that's more to do with the dirty bastards who go up Hanley etc, grab a burger, scoff it, and chuck their shit on the floor. A good friend of my brothers who is a qualified electrician and has worked virtually all of his life recently found himself made redundant. He was 'forced' to paint the high rise, drug addled flats in Stoke, alongside convicted criminals doing community service. He has made the effort to learn a trade to a high standard, through an apprenticeship College etc. Why do they shove him into a form of work that he has never done in his life, with the down and outs, painting flats which are used as pissoirs and dosshouses by drug addled arseholes and drunkard wankers who will NEVER have to work, and will get extra benefits 'because they have a drink/drugs problem' It makes me want to fucking vomit. I went to Stafford a few weeks ago and it was spotless in the centre, putting our local shithole to shame.

how about the government force people to go on courses, and not drop the funding for courses at this difficult time?
its fine making people on jsa do voluntary work (incidently I have been trying to get on with some housing associations, its very difficult) but imho I think they should help to educate people first and foremost
single mothers can get plenty of help on many courses BUT people who are on jsa don't get the help they need.

Completely agree Stokie1000. Anyone who refuses to do at least two days a week on a proper college course or NVQ type course should have their benefits reduced.

a mate of mine left the army after 22 years in jan 2009, he has been out of work since november. he tells me the longer he is off work the less motivated he is to find work
having a mortgage and 3 kids gives him that motivation
earning your benefits is a great idea but there has to be a sensible solution to it.
i do like the idea that anyone who does some sort of community work could even get their benefits increased
it is not acceptable like the daily mail thread today for some cunt to give up work produce 9 kids and live off the state

The Daily Mail ... ;D
They do like to marginalise people don't they? They were even doing that just before the war when they were castigating Jews and singing from Hitlers songsheet.
Seems they haven't changed much. I wouldn't have that knee jerking shitrag in my house for shit paper if I was desperate.

Why not impose a blanket cull every spring to all council estates, the disabled , and all those over 45 ....shoot the fucking lot of them.
You can't have people wandering about uninsured on community service. What if the got injured attacked or raped..? I certainly wouldn't be bending over picking up litter outside them Mosques after those two cases i read about...Oh no...This is GREAT BRITAIN ffs not some downtown suburb of Mumbai or Rangoon.
We need to educate the kids better and underperforming schools and their staff sacked..Out..off.

I offered to do some work painting as I am qualified and got nowhere They said there was no such thing to put me on which seemed stupid to me. Then I started a college course off my own back 2 years NVQ and they toldme that I should quit to do one of their courses which would last about 2 weeks and leave me with NO qualification anyway wheres the sense in that? I got a phone call last week about a job anyway so hopefully I can sign off for good.

Volountary work FFS This country seems to want everything for nothing. Fucking voluntary work, agency work. How can people moan about the unemployed when there are virtually no properly paid jobs available, and then they expect people to work for nothing, or for peanuts so some fucking agency can ponse off their wage packet Makes me steaming fucking mad.
