Hello, Going over to Kalkan in a few weeks, has anybody been there any tips on meals, drinks, things for the kids to do, any help appreciated. I visit Turkey on a regular basis, the people genually are very friendly and hotels are normally OK. Forget bacon butties and such. Now August is extremely hot in Turkey so plenty of high sun protection. I noticed the prices have hiked up in the last couple of years but they are still quite cheap. Enjoy.

Beautiful part of the world Steino. Kalkan's a nice smallish town - still traditionally Turkish (or it was 5 years ago when we went!). Steep cobbled streets, small harbour etc. We had a week there after a week on a Gulet sailing round the coast - best holiday we've ever had - even beat honeymoon in Aruba. We stayed about 20 minutes away in Islamlar up in the mountains - if you're hiring a car I can recommend going off in that direction for a day.
There's only a pebble beach in the town but Patara beach is sand and is miles and miles long and a short drive down the coast. Local(ish) sites - Saklikent Gorge - impressive river/waterfalls. Fethiye is the biggest nearby town - an hour or so away and is quite cosmopolitan, great fishmarket where you choose your fish and they cook it for you in one of the restaurants in the market. Loads of ancient history locally - Lycian tombs (Dalyan delta) and ruins (eg Xanthos).
Enjoy - wish I was going!

I have been with my family twice, its a really nice place. While we were there we went on a jeep safari, really good day out, they pick you up in the morning, stop at some ruins (maybe Xanthos as mentioned above, sorry it was really hot and hard to listen.) Stop for lunch next to a river, then we went to the gorge, which was a lot of fun but the water is freezing! If you do go on a jeep sarafi take plenty of suncream with you as some of the jeeps dont have a roof and the sun is constantly on you.

Steino
i have a couple of places in turkey and holiday there three times a year.Dont know about Kalkan but in general.
Its changed quite a bit in the five years since we bought.
The hassle was quite bad in the resorts but i know that this problem was alleviated by the council closing down places for several nights as punishment.
Its a vast difference out of resort to in resort.resorts can be a bit spivy no different though than other countries. You certainly dont meet the real Turk in resort.
Most Turks are very friendly and you may be surprisd to know that its the fault of the foreign ladies for any hassle mostly.
Its the culture for women not to make eye contact with men unless available .Never mind drop their knickers lol.
Any hassle for women if it happens will be in resorts with the spivs the true Turk out of resort wouldnt say boo to a goose and certainly wouldnt make conversation with a women when her partner is there,Women are not considererd important enough.
Hotels are minus - whatever star they say, anything below 4* is very basic and i would not book one.
Many of the all 5* inclusive are fantastic.
The weather is great 300 days of sun a a year.
Prices are rising rapidly but still cheaper than Europe , Tourist resorts are massively more expensive than say somewhere 10 miles down the coast.Be willing to jump on a dlomus and explore.
The scenery is outstanding.
Try Pide like a cross between a pizza and a flat bread, and Durums ,Chicken in a thin tortilla like wrap, all cheap as chips.
Enjoy.
Im off april 24

Been to Turkey a few times, fave place is Olu Deniz which is near Fethiye, well worth a visit, sure you'll have a great time.
Might be worth looking on tripadvisor and/or holidaysuncovered for recommended places to eat/drink, excursion tips and things to do.
We really enjoyed the jeep safari and white water rafting on the Dalaman river last time.
One last thing, haggle for everything, even the meals out, you'll often get a 10-15% discount if you ask the guy on the street trying to drag you in.
