Man Utd duo must explain comments
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and his assistant Carlos Queiroz Ferguson and Queiroz were angry after United's 1-0 defeat The Football Association wants Sir Alex Ferguson and Carlos Queiroz to explain the comments they made after Manchester United's FA Cup defeat by Portsmouth.
United boss Ferguson criticised referee Martin Atkinson and referees' chief Keith Hackett after Saturday's loss.
Ferguson's assistant Queiroz also spoke out against Atkinson, and the FA has written to the United duo.
They have until 19 March to respond. If any action is taken, the pair would face a fine, not a touchline ban.
Interview: Carlos Queiroz after Pompey defeat
United lost Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final 1-0 but Ferguson felt his side should have had a penalty when Sylvain Distin blocked Cristiano Ronaldo in the first half.
Ferguson told MUTV: "It's absolutely ridiculous. I cannot explain it.
"Managers get sacked because of things like that and he's going to referee a game next week."
And he felt Hackett, the general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Board, should take more responsibility when officials under perform.
"Hackett has got a lot to answer for in this country," added the Scot. "He's not doing his job properly.
"He should be assessed like everyone else is assessed. I'm assessed as a manager, the players are assessed, referees are assessed.
"Martin Atkinson will referee next week, no problem, but his performance today should not be accepted in our game."
Queiroz called Atkinson "a disgrace", claiming the referee allowed Pompey to use over-physical tactics against Ronaldo throughout the game.

So do I 23.
Fergie's been getting away with adverse comments about officials for years, yet if managers of lower profile clubs made the same comments then they were literally clapped in irons and sent to the tower.
As somebody commented on another thread, it's probably Fergie's psychology to get the officials of Man Ure's next game to be overtly sympathetic towards them.
Unless it's Mike Riley, who gives them everything anyway.
