'I played with Ryan for 2 years at Man United - he is not that type of player and he has to move on now' - stick that where it dont shine Arsenal

Yep - but good to hear from a key player in the England camp nonetheless. Looks like Ryan will be well looked after there and the seasoned guys will I hope help him sort his head out

I wonder if Fergie has been in touch with Shawcross to congratulate him on his England call up and maybe words of comfort after this weekend.

Perhaps Wayne would like to play with Ryan again? He would be a good partner for Mama.

Hope he tells Ryan as much while he's there. A little chat with Rooney given his seniority in the game would go a long way to helping him regain his confidence and focus.

Jamie Milner's just said the same, supporting Ryan

Milner was fantastic re Ryan - total support from the whole England camp. Milner said we all know he is not that type of player - it happens in football and was a complete accident - we are all focussing on making him part of the team and feeling welcome

It's good that these two lads have signalled the support on behalf of the squad.
I wonder whether Terry will start on Wednesday. He's in pretty poor form and obviously isn't flavour of the month with Capello. How about Brown (yuck)- Upson - Shawcross - Warnock across the back four?

Can Rooney play in the mama role?
But seriously, this is really excellent of Rooney, and great for Ryan's standing in the England camp

Rooney came over really well in the interview not just in his support for Ryan but the way he handled all the questions. He is a future England captain.

I know Rooney has improved his attitude hugely over the past few years. But something still makes me uncomfortable about the prospect of our Ryan and Rooney being pally... Rarther it be Rooney than Terry or Cashley I suppose though. I wonder if Fergie has been in touch with Shawcross to congratulate him on his England call up and maybe words of comfort after this weekend. I'd rather not have Fergie whispering in Ryan's ear. Not if we still want him to be here next season.

Being supported by players from others clubs while with England will hopefully help Ryan recover from this unfortunate incident. Given the state of England's established central defence - Ferdinand out, Terry lacking form and stripped of the captaincy - I think Shawcross has to get time on the pitch, and not a 10 minute cameo at the end. Capello needs to see him.

Rooney came over really well in the interview not just in his support for Ryan but the way he handled all the questions. He is a future England captain. Agree with that. I saw his comments about the JT/Bridge business first and thought he handled the questions very well. I was thinking how he seems more articulate and at ease with everything. I suppose that confidence comes from being at the top of your game. Then I heard his support for Ryan - said exactly what I was hoping he would. Ryan needs a few experienced players looking out for him........and there are few better than Rooney.

He may do it through a 3rd party,ie the Man Utd players in the England squad. But when Fergie is looking for a new centre half i would think Shawcross will be near the top of his wanted list. With Vidic strongly rumoured to want to move abroad and Ferdinand struggling for fitness and form then fergie maybe already planting a few seeds.I hope Ryan stays with us for a very long time, but the vulchers will be ready to pounce.

Stoke have put a 20mill price tag on his head, if we get that for him from anybody, we shouldn't stand in his way
