During the transfer window, a lot of talk was about strengthening out central midfield, and maybe getting in a specialist full back and a new striker. There was also, in comparison, a small amount of chat about getting proper winger/wide midfielder in, which personally i thought SHOULD have been our priority. I feel that maybe all our eggs have been thrown into the basket marked 'Matthew Etherington' and to a lesser extent (based upon number of appearances) 'Liam Lawrence' And now look what can happen in the space of a game/training session etc - Injuries! Now, look beyond those two, and in our squad (not including players out on loan who arguably aren't actually good enough for our first team) who else do we have who is a specialist wide midfielder? It's Mr. Danny Pugh, and that's actually open to conjecture, as he's also a full back/central midfielder utility player. So, is it time for a bit of Danny Pugh time? Or is it best to put Delap/Whitehead out there? If the latter is the case, i'm not sure what Danny must be thinking, seeing as he wanted reassurance in summer that he was going to feature for us, which he apparantly got from TP etc. Well he's appeared in the league this season, wait for it....wait for it... THREE TIMES - all as substitute. Discuss ;D

I always thought Pugh was distinctly average out wide but looked really good in the middle.

I think Danny is probably a really good bloke to have about the place, and he can do an emergency job in a number of places.
He may well be one of those drafted in, but i'm not sure he's really good enough for this level of football.

He's certainly not a defender! He looked dodgy in the Championship when played at the back.

Definitely, yet in the home fixture against Man City last season he actually did really well at left-back if memories serves me right. (Not saying i'd ever want to see him in defence, God no, just making the point)

Good in CM
OK LM but nothing going forward (OK if Tunny is on other flank, Whitehead bombs on from CM)
Gash at LB
I'd perhaps play him tomorrow if LL is out as well as Ethers.

Coincidentally, we were discussing this earlier and my view is that TP will play Danny out wide left tomorrow in Matty's place in an effort to keep it tight.
Can't really see Tuncay starting either with a line-up something like this: -
Sorensen, Huth, Shawx, Faye, Higgy Rory, Whelen, Whitehead, Pugh Sidibe, Fuller.
Any takers?

Would not be too concerned to see Danny play anywhere in the midfied at least he can pass a football. Bit lightweight to be one of Pulis' maulers.

hi best postion that i have seen him play for Stoke is center mid. seems to have some pace can track back and move forward, bit like Whelan in that he likes to shoot on goal (that in itself is a blessing) and Diao maks Pugh look like Gerrard

I don't care whose names are put forward for us to try out on the left, right or middle as long as the words Salif and Diao are not part of them.

IMHO Danny Pugh, has never let us down and could probably do a job for us wide left. I think he is well balanced and quite a nice footballer. He is a little lightweight and perhaps not quite good enough at premiership level but well worthy of a chance.

I think we have a completely different team and to a certain extent A more mixed style of play since tom soares or micheal Tongue played for us I'd get one of them back to sit on the bench at least. I seem to remember soares linking well with whelan last season.

In general agreement with fromafar apart from a slight exaggeration of how bad Diao is.

I seem to remember soares linking well with whelan last season. I wouldn't have Soares and Tonge back at the training ground to stand still and act as goal posts. They couldn't even follow those simple instructions. ;D

must admit danny as never let us down, seems to be a great lad and true proffessional, hes waited for his chance now give it him, i prefer see him on the left than someone like delap who would be like a duck out of water, it will give us balance, if he aint going get his chance then keeping him on the books is just ludicrous

I always thought Pugh was distinctly average out wide but looked really good in the middle. Agreed. I would probably say he's a better left-back than left-midfielder aswell, certainly a very good squad player to have at the club though.

It's frustrating that he cannot play the wide role well because I reckon, pound for pound, that he is the best crosser at the club by a long way.
I can remember some right pearlers in the Championship.

pugh in my opinion should be gettin a chance. he can defend and attack well, plays in more than one position and always gives 100 percent. ive been the mitch a few times aswell and he trains very well and trains better than diao and delap nd maybe few others

Agreed. Surely the logical choice is Tuncay and Rory out wide with Whelan and Whitehead in the middle?

You'd think there would be room for him really, with both wingers out then we can have a centre mid on the right allowing us to include delap

Pugh and Delap on the wing spells major full back protection.
