3-0 up at half time and seemingly coasting, I reminded my mate of a certain Stern John.
In February 2008, Stoke were in a similar position at home to Southampton. Again, set pieces were important and Mama Sidibe scored his first goal of the season (ironically the third of the match).
Against Southampton we went into our shells and John scored twice- one a belting dipping volley, pretty much identical to Dempsey's screamer last night.
Despite the scare, we ended up winning, just as we did against Fulham.
After that Southampton win, we obviously went onto triumph and gain promotion.
However, if we had let that lead slip then morale could have easily been sapped. The same would have happened if we didn't gain the three points last night from such a commanding position.
It was a crucial, no, mammoth victory against a very good Fulham side and bodes well for the future of our campaign.
The future's bright, the future's red & white.

You know what Knowlesey son, me old man raised his concerns at HT stating he hopes we don't do what we did against Southampton.

3-0 up (and should have been more) at half-time, looking in total control and then ending up hanging on for grim death at the end.
That's probably why we all love Stoke City.

We had exactly the same conversation at H-T. Little did we know how buttock-clenchingly accurate it would prove.

Stern John got the first in the first minute of the second half if I remember rightly. I was still under the Boothen finishing my beer!!!

It often works that way. 2-0 is a difficult lead to take into a second half. 3-0 is even harder because it seldom occurs. A 3-0 defecit is the easiest one to take on, as a team in that position. You have one option - throw caution to the wind and to the hell with it. The best thing we can do from now on is to turn down the opportunity of 2 extra goals, and be happy with the 1-0 at half time.

That was the same day my Grandad died so I remember that game far too well. It was a fitting way to end the day.
