Deffo right wing, on his debut ( I think ) he absolutely mullered the then England full back Kenny Samson, can still se him now running at Samson towards the old Boothen End, he had just skinned him on his inside and came running at him again. Samson was a good player and when he saw his run he blocked his route inside...no problem, Chambo played the ball inside him, ran onto the dirt track, all the way around him back onto the pitch and got the ball at a fantastic speed. Don't get me started on his wonder goal away at Brum when it seemed like he took on everyone of there players the whole lenghth of the pitch to score, at the time he was one of the most gifted players around, then fuck knows what happened to him ???

In that first season after joining from fail, he regularly had 3 players on him, his pace is what we sorely miss in the present side he was lightning on his day. probably that first seasons games at home were his finest.
Was exciting every time he got the ball, like Matty a lot and this level is much better so unfair comparison, but I expect MC was faster.

I went to see him on his debut for England , when we beat Luxembourg 9-0, scored as well . Was also at Brum for that wonder goal, he ran them ragged and i think it may have been their left back who kicked him to pieces through frustration and got sent off . 4-0 up at ht , happy days ;D . He was unplayable on his day.

Remember watching him at Man City giving their full back (McDonald ??) about 20 yards start and still beating him to the ball. A genuinely exciting player...whose talent we wasted.

After the game in Brazil when John Barnes scored his wonder goal, the Times did a colour supplement feature called "The Black Pearl". But it wasn't about Barnes, it was a feature on our Mark who was the man of the match in that particular game.

great player when fit, unfortunately he was dogged with hamstring trouble, a common problem with speed merchants.

After the game in Brazil when John Barnes scored his wonder goal, the Times did a colour supplement feature called "The Black Pearl". But it wasn't about Barnes, it was a feature on our Mark who was the man of the match in that particular game. I had that article cut out and stuck on my wall at the time, dB. I think the title was actually "The Black Stanley Matthews." It told how the skills of a locally born winger were once again enchanting the potteries faithful and packing the terraces at the Victoria ground. He was the best player I ever saw in the red and white stripes . Neville had been a Vale regular for a few years and when we wanted Mark we had to take them as a brace. I was gutted when we sold him to Sheffield. He failed to fulfill the potential that he was more than capable of but in today's market you'd be looking at a 15 mill plus fee.

Ethers is good but has nothing like the impact Chambo did when he first played for us. Teams didn't know what to do with him.
I remember lots of press coverage too, back in the days when sports pages were only a couple, rather than a pull out section. One of the Matthews comparisons suggested he had everything Sir Stan had but was better in the air ;D Slightly hyped shall we say?
Unfortunately teams worked out that if you put markers on him we weren't as quick in other areas of the pitch, plus he kept being injured. But for a while it was fun.

Memories Of Mark... Brian Clough quote.."If I was England manager Mark Chamberlain would have so many England caps even the queen Mother would have an opinion on him !!! " Went to his potential England debut, turns out he did come on as a sub,Butch Ray Wilkins immediately went out of his way to give Mark an early touch by passing to him on the touchline,as the ball got to him I let out a massive cheer ( no-one else around me did obviously, they after all weren't aware of his magic ) only for Mark to muck up his attempt at trapping the ball and it rolling under his foot for a throw in. Later when he scored , a group of Watford boys around me who had already celebrated a Blissett hat-trick jumped all over me in a good natured "mental" at my hero scoring. ;D The bazaar sight of Mark guest appearing on The Sooty Show..... Recently seeing him in a Pizza Hut in Fareham ,Portsmouth and chatting to him about how fondly we still remember him at Stoke and him chatting about life after football, although some remember him as a bit flash around town in his heyday he couldn't have been a sounder bloke when I met him.Sad to hear that Pompey have sacked him since I spoke to him.

He scored an absolutely incredible goal v West Ham in a 5-2 win after beating about 5 players but the linesman flagged Sammy Mac offside.Terrible decision.
On the S America tour he voted England's best player- had a great game v Uruguay after the Brazil win although missed a great chance after robbing their full back and shooting wide.
His debut v Arsenal was sensational. After his injury he was never the same.
