I love Rory and what he's done for us BUT it is time to let go and say goodbye. The long throw has outlived it usefulness and he is too slow and ineffectual in midfield....
Sorry mate, time to go to the bench.......

Agreed !
Reckless in the tackles, If he's picked he should play in the middle but not on the right side.

Absolute bloody rubbish, when he's in centre midfield he's one of the best at the club.
Agreed that he's ineffective on the right wing but that's a lot different than his natural position of centre midfield.

Delap is the big test for TP and his hard-nosed objectivity. It's clear to everyone except him that a better midfield would be Lawrence Whelan Whitehead and Etherington, with Diao, Pugh and Delap on standby on the bench. But read any interview of TP where he mentions Rory, and it's clear he loves the guy.

He needs to be played in the middle.

It's a tough one cos we all love him.......

He isn't what we need to 'push on' if he is to go centre mid then Glenn and Dean are in front of him in the queue now.

I was afraid he'd turn into this season's Cresswell and sadly that's just what he's doing. He can be a cracking Champ player for another 3 or 4 seasons with his level of fitness but he's not cutting it in the Prem anymore.

If he were in the middle there'd be no problem because just like last season he'd be our best central midfielder. However, we're insisting on playing him in a role that he just isn't suited to and not only does it show Rory up, it limits the team. It creates this situation where he's a liability in attack through no fault of his own and a number of supporters are getting on his back because he keeps Lawrence out of the team, although I'd argue that Diao/Whitehead are keeping Lawrence out of the team. He should be back in the middle, Diao simply isn't reliable or consistent enough.
As for the long-throws, maybe if somebody bloody moved in the box instead of standing still and maybe if we didn't leave our 6'4 full back and 6'2 centre-back on the halfway line we'd have a bit more chance of scoring from one.

On the wing he is bloody awful
But in the middle he can be pretty handy.

well IF liam was ill/unfit today then we really had no other choice but to play Delap.
i think in a normal game it'd be him & diao/whitehead in the middle.

Absolute liability recently, clumsy challenges, terrible distribution, bench at best for me though I'd be pretty happy for him to move on. I think we need younger legs for defensive mid and much more creativity from this area of the pitch. If we had a younger defensive midfielder his partner in there might even be able to be freed from the cage to get forward occasionally.

delap and whelan in the middle for me against teams we can beat. whitehead and diao for tough defensive games.
delap looks too slow for the wings and does seem to put in half arsed tackles lately.
still think his long throws are good. its boring watching games when he not playing as short throws never come to anything.

Fair enough play him in the middle (He's better than Whitehead), but he shoulnd't even be considered for the right wing i'm afraid.

Agree with the majority, completely useless out wide. How can he play out wide when he can't take anyone on? Maybe in the middle, but we've got to see some more creativity in there so I reckon Whelo would be the way to go. Delap's throws have been useless this season so its gotta be time to give him a rest. To be fair with Pulis today we didnt really have any alternative with Lawrence unable to play.

At the end of the day I'd still play Rory and Whelan as our first choice pairing in the centre of midfield.
For sure it's an area of the pitch that we need to address in January and it was an area we needed to address last summer but at the moment, they're the best that we've currently got IMHO.

Pulis seems to be happy with his combative midfielders at least for this campaign.

The long throw aint working for some reason and he is too slow and reckless in the tackle,so sorry Rory you have to be dropped.Maybe central midfield but he cant fucking control the ball or pass it so a little bit of a problem i think.

Delap's legs have started to go, at least at Premier League level. He's often a fraction late when tackling (see Arsenal and Portsmouth penalties) and his balance in possession of the ball isn't as it once was.
I love Rory, and his Stoke Hero status is guaranteed, but he's no longer a starter for me.

I am certain that if Liam had been fit then Delap would have been on the bench. He may no longer be worth a starting place, but he still has a lot to offer.
