Gutting for him, he'd be very much involved in the England setup now if it wasn't for his rotten luck with injuries. Hopefully he can stay involved in the game in a coaching capacity.

Was that his injury picked up while playing for England? That's a shame, he was a very good player, a fine goalscorer.

Great shame - I can't recall a forced retirement with so much advance publicity. Always sad to see a potentially great player forced to retire early. As Luke says I hope he can still build a future within the game.
Mystical - yes it was the ankle injury picked up in training with England. I presume the long delay in announcing the retirement might be something to do with West Ham, their insurers and England sorting out who pays compensation?

I doubt this will be the end for Ashton. In about two years when his current injury has finally healed, he'll probably get back into the game at some level. Just look at Neil Harris at Millwall.
Unfortunate for the bloke, and bad luck for England. A fully-fit Ashton would be partnering Rooney at the WC if I was Capello.

I don't really like this idea that's been going around of him suing SWP and Chelsea 2 years after the event, talk about hindsight.

You're right RVD, it was cancer. I just don't think this is the end for Ashton somehow.

Surely if they claim insurance compensation for 'career ending injury' - Than Ashton would not be able to play at any professional level ever again?

Yes, I guess considerations like these are extremely important. I suspect such compensation would not be affected by DA staying in football as other posters have suggested e.g. coaching?

To be fair, it's a lot more dignified that he retire like this than if he'd actually come to Stoke in the summer and spent four months on the bench, being told that he has to try and win a place in the team ahead of Mamady Sidibe!

As i say on the DA thread below Smudge, unless his injury has got worse since (& why would it, he's not been playing?) i can't really see why he was ever in the frame to move to us or anyone else if it was that bad?
But even that is a double edged sword for us (at our current "stage" let's say) because, had he been the full picnic in terms of fitness, i honestly doubt we would have been in with a realistic shout anyway.
It was our Battersea Dog's Home credentials that made it a goer in the first place i guess.
Overall a great shame though, he could have been an England regular &, had he come here, a legend* - even if he did have to wait his turn behind Mama !
* whether the two are mutually exclusive is another debate.

Mr Rottweiler......... Sorry mate - just can't stand him. I was at Crewe with him in the youth team etc, and he was such a big head then.....we don't need anyone like this at our club. Plus the fact, he's cack !! I'd rather us sign someone like Van NistleHorse for 2 seasons !!

Not bitter at all then Katjam about his success? To be fair the lad was always destined for bigger and better things than Crewe and thats probably why he was arrogant. Thing is though, as long as he's got the ability to back up his big headedness then why not! A fit Dean Ashton would be a very useful addition to our squad and the England team, it's a shame it'll never happen!

Yes, i think he must have nicked your shinnies or similar eh Katjam?
The thing is, you were, perhaps, (mis)fortunate enough to "know" him unlike 99.9% of fans that would ever have seen him - and they can therefore only judge him on the pitch. And, as one of them, i can only say i thought he was the real deal on his day.
And as jjip says, that arrogance may well just "go with the territory" - for e.g. that Portuguese twatter playing for Real ain't exactly shy & retiring is he & he's pretty good whatever you think of his personality.

Desperate news at such a young age, younger still considering when he first got the injury. It makes you realise what a lottery the game is really.

A shame, but the writing was on the wall. If SCFC was sceptical about signing him then it must have been a nasty and very obvious injury.
