Well. Probably not if you're younger than 39 or didn't frequent the kind of dives that substitued for venues in Stoke in the late 1980s. Still, a gnats fart before Acid House made the Potteries the centre of the cultural universe (albeit briefly) there was a vibrant indie-pop scene bubbling under the clay of the 6 towns. The Speedpuppies were one such band and were briefly immortalised in graffiti on a wall of the A34 underpass in N-U-L. Now after a 21 year hiatus their first and only EP has been released on Cloudberry Records - a U.S label that looks to Stoke as many 1970's Stokies looked to Detroit for their cultural inspiration. The Speedpuppies were an early outlet for Pete B. of Rosehips and Horowitz fame. If you find appeal in thrashy guitar noise with indie girl vocals check out the myspace www.myspace.com/thespeedpuppies

The shameless self-promotion continues. if any of the 26 of you who viewed the original post are further inclined, here is an interview that was given for the EP release. It gives nice insight into the live music scene in Stoke at the the time. There are even a few mentions of the mighty Stoke - bloody hell, maybe that qualifies it for a posting on the main board. ;D cloudberryrecords.com/blog/?p=1588
