Lennie/ Welan /Delap/ Ethers
Not me just saying it but the stats also back me up. Last season they lined up 7 times and this season just twice. But the results are interesting...P9 W5 D2 L2 F9 A4
So why the need for 2/3 holding/defensive options in there? The argument is that it would be tighter defensively. But just conceding 4 in 9 and in fact the opposition never scored twice in a game. This season when they have started we kept both clean sheets. So much for defensive midfielders. The lineup only happened though because of injury to both Faye and Diao. Tone seems to always favour at least 2 defensive players in the lineup....But come on tone give it another go...you might be surprised!

Diao has to start in central midfield when available, for me.

Diao has to start in central midfield when available, for me. Whelan and Delap at home, Whelan or Delap with Diao away. Not sure Diao is the kind of player you need at home in winnable games.

Seems to me that lineup has been ok defensively...maybe Diao for Rory away from home but the point is that the 2 wide players with Glen in the middle works.

For one game I'd love to see:
Ethers - Whelan - Lawrence - Tuncay.
Pulis would vomit.

Tuncay would be better in the middle than Lawrence would.

If we played the ball mainly on the deck then Tuncays best position would be 'in the hole' just behind Fuller. He would have to do too much tracking back if he was out wide, so we wouldn't see the full benefit of his creativity

Would anybody like to offer an explanation why our midfield is better than the one above with Whitehead in the centre which then pushes Rory onto the flank and consequently means that Liam isn't even on the pitch? cheers

Good thread.
For me it would be at home Delap and Whelan in the middle with Lawrence and Ethers out wide. However take Rory off after 70 mins and bring Diao on or Tuncay if we need a goal.
Away from home, Diao coming in for Delap.

I think he means ------------------------------GK-------------------------------- ----------------------------Back 4----------------------------- ---------------------------------Arismendi-------------------- Lawrence------------------------------------------Ethers--- -------------------Tuncay------------------------------------- -----------------------------CF's------------------------------- So that Tuncay is esentially playing CM, but in a much more CAM role than Arismendi, who'd provide cover for the back four.

It seems the midfield TP stumbled upon towards the end of last season and indeed the one which saw us over the safety line did a great job. Surely the management can see that..so why go back to the first half of last season. But we will ever see that lineup again? with Diao and Faye due back soon I think its very unlikely.

Lawrence Dio Delap Etherington Is it just me or does anyone else think that centre pairing lacks a little height? ;D Maybe he could wail the opposition into giving him the ball....?

I see a few people putting Tuncay in the middle there; as much as I'd love to see him on the park I really don't think that would work at all.
Lawrence - Delap - Diao - Ethers
.......seems to be the best all round bet.

Surprised to see Diao get into a few of those selections after a couple of average games back?
It seems that people's short term memories are stronger than their long-term ones. Everyone was crying out for Diao to be fucked off last season and when he did settle down for his annual long-term rest, Pulis fell upon his best midfield quartet of the season that saw us to a comfortable finish.
I would return to that personally.
Liam - Delap - Whelan - Ethers

Diao has looked pretty composed recently in the games he has played, if his form continues and he stays injury-free then I think he would be my first choice with Delap to come on late on and bombard the box with his torpedoes if needed.

Tuncay as the creative midfielder with arismendi purely in the middle to win the ball and give it tuncay. Ringtone and liam posing, posturing and dancing on the flanks and pulis ripping his hair out. If only

id be over the moon if pulis uses lennie, glenn, rory, ethers against pompey they will run riot over them, also fuller will not have to do any providing like he has been and can focus on goals again.
