Never played it online, all i know is one person starts a game and sets it to network game in preferences, then people search the name of the game (Thread title maybe) through 'Join network game' on the title screen. Then i think there will be a password that the originator sets!
Also i think you all have to be online at the same time, as the games all play simultaneously!

I had a network game running with 2 of my mates for FM2008 and we all had to do Port Forwarding on our routers, one of us had to setup the game and then we'd all have to be online at the same time for the game to work as we intended To say it was a pain in the arse is a bit of an understatement but when we were actually playing, it wasn't half bad

I was thinking of setting up an "oatcake league" with 12-24 identical teams or maybe just use the prem and replace all the teams with identical teams (modeled on Stoke) so its a level playing field and comes down to how you utilise your resources

I've never played it online before, might be better if we don't have idnetical teams and just select the side we want to be, or have players we would like that are under a value of £8M ? or we could use Dave's idea.

It's a good idea in theory, but often a network game with more than 2/3 players suffers from lag and on matchdays you can find it quite slow to make any progress.
Some advice, if you're going to do it is get Hamachi, not sure if the problems are still there this year, but last year you would struggle to connect to another PC. Put force continue on at 30 seconds, so you don't have to wait for every one to press continue and to set assistant managers to do pre-season friendlies.
It's like a normal game, so its usually good to pick similar stature clubs in the same league for a good challenge, me and 2 mates are starting one on Tuesday - when Modern Warfare 2 comes out. We then play it alongside that and its not as tedious and one person presses continue and it does it for all of us.
As for your suggestion inverness, it would be incredibly difficult, all people need the starting database - so you would have to pick it all and say Dave is the host, he has to create a database. He then has to send this custom database to each person who wants to join before they can connect. This takes quite a while to do, as the database files are rather large in size.
The more people you have the slower, and longer it will take to get through a season on the game, and you can't guarantee everyone will be on at the same time etc. Also worth bearing in mind, the host of this game can cheat with the in-game editors. So you will definitely want a trustworthy hoster for this.
