I am writing a profile of Bertie Biggins and thought I'd watch the tape of the Autoglass victory over Stockport in 1992.
People who knock these competitions obviously haven’t had the experiences we had back then. What a glorious sunny day that was!
Stockport had just knocked us out of the playoffs and were in fact quite a good team. They certainly played more football than Stoke on the day. We were missing playmaker Beeston and Macari must have decided to settle for the win - fine by me
Fox played in goal for the first time for 12 months and I had forgotten that Adrian Heath had played in that match
Bertie didn’t do a lot, spending most of his time chasing punts upfield. Late on he put in a two footed challenge which would have been a certain sending off today
The match was settled by a top class finish from Steino and Stoke finished well on top
Our first trophy for 20 years shown off to an ecstatic crowd outside the Kings Hall Stoke on the Sunday

An absolutely superb day! and one I will not be forgetting till I go gar gar!! ;D I was 16 at the time, and still have apic of me somewhere with my face fully painted up! I still watch the video every now and then, and enjoy it like I was there all over again, and actualy makes me quite emotional. It might have only been the 'mickey mouse' cup, but I'm sure glad we won it anyway! ;D ;D
p.s. Didnt Fox play in all the Autoglass games? It was only the league games he didnt play in! At the time I was led to believe that we would of had to pay him a large amout of dosh for reaching 400 league games?

I can remember being too nervous to enjoy it just in case we got beat again and at wembley. Real relief at the final whistle. The M6/M1 chocka with Stokies and taking the piss out of the odd Stockport car.
We stayed over at the Wembley Hilton to see England play Brazil the next day. As we walked to the hotel we met the Stoke players coming out of the stadium and David Kevan, great bloke he was, went onto the coach and got the trophy so we could have a hold of it.
Was a great day and to see us win was immense.
next week me and the girlfriend went to Florida where we met a family of Stockport fans desperate to get the play off result in a pub. They had booked their holiday a year ago and were gutted to have missed it. I'd just spoken to my Dad at home and had great pleasure in telling them posh had won 2-1. The whole family burst into tears, me and Sar burst out laughing.
Still remember the pub name, The Rovers Return in Kissimmee, Fla. Made my holiday. I hated Stockport that year.

Chris - I think you are right - they mentioned that he hadn't played a league game for a year but he did play in the Autoglass - I do seem to remember that Ronnie was injured or suspended?
JR - we had good reason to hate Stockport - irritating bastards with that c unt Gemmil(?) who got Beeston sent off in the first leg of the playoffs - he got flattened at Wembley which I'm sure was retribution (maybe from Biggins) ;D
We stayed in Wembley too - got back on the Sunday to the old Vic for a few and on to the Kings Hall - great day
I also remember that free kick at Stockport from Ward which was just too high for Sinclair
We owed em big time! ;D ;D

Fox played because Ronnie Sinclair was cup tied with Bristol City, Jason Kearton actually played in goal for us on loan in the first game (won 2-0 at Walsall) Kevin Pressman played in the semi final at Leyton Orient and the Southern semi final home leg against Peterborough, dropped some howlers in that game when we blew a 2-0 lead to draw 3-3, Bertie scored twice and the ref had a go at him because he was wearing a ring that needed taping up) I remember Stockport having a goal ruled out in the first half, we were level with Stein's goal on the same side as the TV cameras, can still see it hitting the net now ;D wish the Ansells kit would still fit me

Remember getting on the "sentinel football special" from stoke station, banter all the way down & back, beers being drank, me mate's dad in his red shell suite bottoms. Sun, Steino, Being in "the smoke", there being stokies everywhere...walking down wembley way, with my £1 scarf (i still have some where) bought from a hawker outside stoke station. Still have the piccy's somewhere, like ChrisEvans I was 16 at the time, it was a big day out, remember being held back as they cleared the stockport fans back onto the trains, and the entire crowd chanting... "next year, we'll see you all next year....." a GREAT day to be a stokie

I've still got a t-shirt i bought that day,. It's got a few holes in it now but i aint gonna chuck it. Actually it's got fookin loads of holes in it . Living in Peterborough made it special too seeing as we'd knocked them out in the area final & they were looking forward to their day at Wembley too. There was summat special about Wembley which you dont get at the Millstad.

There was summat special about Wembley which you dont get at the Millstad. - yeah, crap toilets, traffic congestion, pillars in the way, dodgy cockney "street vendors".... 'twas a great day though. I recently had a chuck-out of old clothes and found a couple of T's from that era. Great nostalgia - put them in the "Keep" pile. Waited for the team-bus to do the rounds on the way up to Hanley with the trophy then zoomed down to Stoke. Managed to get a piccie of Bertie holding the Trophy on the King's Hall balcony by holding the camera above my head and hoping for the best. ;D

A great day.
My eldest son was just 1 year old at the time, and was looked after in the week by a local child-minder here in Southport where I live, Ann Jones. Her hubby is Dave Jones, now Wolves boss, at the time he was Stockport's assistant manager.
loads of banter all week leading up to the final, especially after we'd lost the playoffs, Couldn't wait till Monday morning to drop me lad off - Jonesy was nowhere in sight. gave it to his wife and kids though (fnar fnar).
Had a few before the game in a pub at wembley, got lost from the people I was with on the way out of the ground, and ended up on the Stockport train - just got off before it left!

Aaaaaah Wembley '92.
Old stagers had their League Cup glory, but to those fans who came to Stoke post-Meadow Lane then the Macari era stands like a shining beacon in a quarter century of despair.
Unlike other games, this was an event which started in anticipation weeks before the ticket was actually bought.
I remember the trip down, looking out of the coach window and seeing a sea of red and white on the M6, Wembley Way thronged with Stokies, the sight of the stadium engulfed in red and white, Delilah ringing around the stadium, Mark Stein's winner and the happy, happy journey home.
My red Stoke training top I wore under my shirt is still with me today (washed I should point out) but it only gets worn for big occasion must-win games as I don't want to goad the gods of football by wearing it too often.
My favourite memory, strangely enough, was not Bertie throwing his shirt into the crowd or the final whistle. It was on the journey home as the coach was about to drop us off in Stoke seeing a tired and emotional Stokie stagger down the street spot us all and then jump up and down and wave manically. It still makes me smile 22-years on...
Incidentally, I found my team poster the other day and it's now at work. But the Baggies fans i work with just don't understand. Yam Yams, eh?

You've done me a few favours here Wisemaster I'm currently trying to beef up the content on the Oatcake site with a few articles, and people's transcripts on here will make a good section about the Autoglass Final. This thread will be pinned to the top of the board for the next week if anyone else wants to join in about their day in 1992. Meanwhile already got a few great scanned photos from the day itself to go online on the Oatcake...

I remember that day very well.
I was only 12 at the time, though already a regular at the Vic. i was so excited about actually going 2 Wembley!
I can remember stopping at Watford gap services and there were, what seemed like, thousands of Stokies around, magic!
The match was well worth going for.
Stieno's goal was magic. Even being the tender age of 12 i can still remember going mad, looking up at my dad who was going just as mad next to me! Magic.
Possibly the funniest moment was on the way home, when we were passing a coach load of Stockport fans, some of which decided to 'moon' us through the windows, ill never forget the large skid mark left by one of them! Classic! ;D
The victory parade in stoke is another memory ill never forget, it was the first time id heard, 'We'll be with you'. It was played over the tannoy i can remember. I remember my dad sayin it was released as a single or something, and how crap it was!
i still have my Stoke top from the time and various pieces of memorabilia. A day a will never, ever forget!

Gareth - that wonderful picture brings back a few memories - we were standing somewhere in front of that wagon listening to Berties rendition of Delilah
How much better the town centre gathering was than collecting in the stadium?
BTW are you now investing in this new site or will this stuff go onto the old Oatcake site if we go back?
Amazing what you come across when you look back - in an old paper there is a reference to a certain TP getting a Stoke player sent off in a game - I'll check the story out and report back

I decided to travel to this game by official coach from the Vic with my brother. This meant driving up from Leicester then going back down on the coach to within 6 miles of my house, back to Stoke on the coach afterwards, again passing within 6 miles of home, and then drive back to Leicester. Still it was worth it for the 'craic' and the result ;D

Hmmmm 1992 yep i remember it aswell, i was only 10 at the time.
Went on coach with the local pub that my old man drinks in. It was one of the best if not the best days off my life.
If i remember right Big Kevin Francis scored but didn't stand.
Steino's goal was amazing, and the mental was cracking.
We went down to king street for the parade and it was just a sea of Red and White, then shot off to the kings hall in stoke.
Just wish we still did that now going to the kings hall and having a right good sing song. Would be alot better than the Brit.
God the hairs on my arms and back stand up when i think of the days like that.
Goarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrn Stoke

Yes, brilliant day out. Also went with my father too and it makes things that little bit special this Dads, Lads and footie thing doesn't it?
I've also got the tape produced by Radio Stoke and there's a great bit on the commentary when Ivan Gaskell is interviewing on the pitch and a Delilah starts up. They Stop the broadcast and say "just listen to this". Hairs standing on the back of the neck stuff until this very day for me ;D

The three things about that day that I remember is at last walking up Wembley Way to see Stoke play at Wembley Stadium. It was so good that I turned round and did it a second time.
I then saw Mickey Thomas surrounded by a bunch of Stokies and managed to shake his hand.
Whilst seeing us win a trophy bought a lump to my throat, I nearly lost it when Peter Fox lifted up the cup.
In turn each of the players lifted the Autoglass Trophy and recieved a cheer from the delerious travelling Stokies but the biggest cheer was saved for Foxy. If I remember correctly it was his last ever game for us.
A superb accolade for a superb servant to Stoke City.
