I'm sure there are few footie fans who don't remember this guy. Ally's Tartan Army, arguably Scotland's greatest ever team that was going to take Argentina by storm.
Dalglish, McQueen, Rioch, Gemmill, Jordan, Robertson etc....what a disaster they were. 3-1 defeat to Peru and that man Cubillas, 1-1 with the mighty Iran and then one of the all time great World Cup games v Holland. THAT goal by Gemmill and then Johnny Rep putting an end to it all.
Was only 10 at the time but actually felt sorry for Ally, seemed a decent bloke.

wow I still remember the words, and I was only 12 at the time.

There was a guy from Glasgow who sold his shop to go and watch what he said would be Scotland winning the World cup ;D £12,000 it cost him to go which was 25 years ago. Was so expensive to travel in those days only 14 Scots went. Had to laugh at them ;D

Ally McLeod just got carried away! There must have been a huge wave of optimism in Scotland with them qualifying, and us failinbg to qualify, and he got swept away with it.
With the players they had in 78 they should have done better.

It was criminal Joe when you saw that one from England and Italy qualified that year. The gap between the two sides was non existant as the final table proved, goal difference v Luxembourg the deciding factor. Italy were arguably the best team in 78, they beat Argentina on their own patch and it was no co-incidence the basis of that team won the World Cup in 82. Remember the Peru v Argentina game??? Very dubious. Ramon Quiroga did his best to dive in the opposite direction from the ball.
Scotland as you said certainly had a side capable of making the 1/4 finals I felt. Alan Rough aside it was a real good team.....made up of top stars in our league as well. How things change eh?

Yeah the Peru Argentina game. Its never actually been proved though. Peru played like a side that had chucked the game though.
Two groups was a daft format anyway.
Italy yes. fine side. When they beat Argentina in the group they were fantastic.

Ally McLeod would have made a great fisherman! By the time he got down the pub, it would have been the Loch Ness Monster that got away. ;D I was a student at the time and it fun to watch the Scots squirming in the Common Room as he got more and more carried away with each interview. His big mistake in Argentina was not to treat Peru with sufficient respect. Like Merson for Walsall on Saturday, Cubillas was in a different class to any other player they had and Scotland left him too much time and space. As for Iran. Scotland have always been the football equiFailnt of the Keystone Cops. Leave a bannana skin around and they will seek it out unerringly. The match against Holland was a glimpse of what might have been. It always makes me smile when they show Archie Gemmill's goal and you can hear Bobby Charlton in the background screaming his head off. A great World Cup moment! ;D His treatment by the media on his return was appalling.

Nice to have someone who bites so easily mate this early (!!!) 78 was the first World Cup I remember. Being a bit (!!!) naive and young, with all the hype I thought Scotland would win it easy. Did actually feel sorry for Ally which is a sentiment rarely shared with the Scots.

3 things that stood out Joe, THAT chant, Ally with head in hands and David Coleman's fantastic commentary "Gemmill, good play by Gemmilll....AND AGAIN!!!" I often felt if the Dutch didn't have Jongbloed in goal they might have gone all the way...well one step further. Didn't Van Henegan refuse to travel? Great midfielder who fell out with the coach and then burst out crying after on a TV interview. They had a great side, Rep, Krol, Haan etc and of course our fave Nanninga

They weren't far off winning the big one JR. I wonder if Cruyff rues his refusal to travel.
The thing is about Scotland is that they were so foolish in their approach. I have a load of vintage World Cup footage and theres Bruce Rioch in 78 saying that the video of a Peru game arived late at the hotel so they didn't bother watching it!
That open top bus around Hampden too! How many Scottish cringes has that memory been responsible for?

In them days Joe, an unrecognised football country like Peru was always looked down upon. You didn't really get the emerging nation who had qualified for the World Cup through a tricky group. Some of the teams who went there like Zaire were whipping boys. Smaller footballing nations like Peru and Iran were almost frowned upon and teams played them with the expectancy of just turning up and rolling them over. Something you can't do these days, even the weakest of nations in qualifying have to be given respect.
I remember David Coleman/Jimmy Hill being aware of Cubillas etc but wonder how much like you say, the Scots were. He was an outstanding player and wasn't given any respect at all.

But JR I bet you that, even back then, the vast majority of sides made sure the minnows were watched a few times.

Without a doubt Joe. To play a South American side on their own continent with that attitude was asking for trouble.
When Jordan gave them the lead they looked like they were out for a stroll. Remember the shock when Peru equalised??!!! The cheek of it. As for Iran, I seem to remember Scotland's goal being an og as well.

Yes it was! That was the game where the clip of Ally with his head in his hands came from!
If ever you visit we'll spend a night or two going through football videos.
