The two managers are so similar and yet one is our most popular boss since Waddo and one has been hated by a large section of our support until very recently. Pulis will go one better than Lou this season and then deserves to take on the mantle from Lou as being the best since Waddo. Sentinel article

Agree Liverpool
Sick of all this Macari stuff- did a good job but failed when it mattered. Am sure if Pulis lost in the play-offs would be slaughtered in some quarters.

Macari... Always. If not just for the fact that he was the first manager I can properly remember, and him + the Vic = my childhood.

Soi... Macari never had the resources that Pulis now has. As we have strengthened, Coates pulled the rug from under Lou's feet when he sold Psech. The jury is still out on Pulis for most. The Macari era was great, and the Pulis one keeps getting better. Time will tell

Having his fucking top scorer sold from under him just before the play-offs didn't exactly help did it JR? And who was it who did that?

Get your facts right- Pesch asked to leave a month before
Macari cocked up on bringing Mendonca in for what would have been our record signing- who did that RAF? Was Macari himself and his agents 'fee' -see the signing of John Gayle and the big purse that came with it
Facts H
Not as if Mendonca did anything at Charlton was it

To even get that 95/96 squad into the play-offs with the resources that macari had was a miracle. Nobody in their right mind could deem it a failure.
If Pulis does go one better and get us up then you'd certainly have to rate him above even the legend that is Lou Macari.

Soi. All I stated was "Its got to be Macari at the moment". Tony still hasn't won anything at all with Stoke. If we get promoted with Tony this season, then I will change my mind, but until then, Stoke won more trophies and promotions under Macari.

Like I said won NOTHING at this level
Agree re Pesch being sold but the Mendonca situation completely Lou's fault
We had an initial offer refused and then an offer of 820k accepted. Lou wanted 75k or himself from Mendonca's representatives but they said no- was something Lou often did.
As a result no deal was struck and we were left without the player.
Just for the record I was at the ground that day on corporate issues and the staff were fuming- Lou was at Uttoxeter races by the way.
Same happened with Steve Stone and a Scottish player named Gary Queen who Joe Jordan later chased on Lou's say so
Macari did a great job in getting us into the play-offs but we went out with a whimper- shame.
Don't see the need to compare the two to be honest. Different circumstances different times.
Cambridge did a wonderful job making the play-offs in that division also.
Macari is past history and has nothing to do with the current season.

Has to be Lou, if only for giving me one of the most enjoyable seasons ever when we steamrollered everyfucker and the awaydays were fantastic!
Great days.
If we get promoted then this season wont be far off.

Soi, totally agree with the comment "Macari is past history and has nothing to do with the current season". At times this is why when people put posts on about previous players, managers, grounds etc, it is all opinions and at times can get a little frustrating. Still makes good reading though.
Cheers

I think this sale of pesch is over played personally.
Firstly I never really rated him for Stoke and secondly unless I'm wrong hadn't we signed Sheron?

I remember all the songs we had for Lou - never hear anything for TP............... come to think of it, hardly ever seem to hear anything for individual players apart from for Ric when he scores.

pulis has put up with a lot from certain stoke fans, ok he's spent a few quid but spent very well,in his team we have what macari had......and in a way plays the same style of football....this division has got to be the hardest one to get out of and with the squad earlier in the season he has worked wonders...ok we won a couple of minor trophy's under lou (although they did'nt seem minor at the time) its always been promotion thats the main priority...i'll go with pulis cause nobody gave him a chance.................

macari did a great job at stoke, got them up from div 2 and left, then came back to get us into the play-offs but failed at key moment. pulis has saved us from relegation, steadied us, got sacked and then come back and this season has us challenging.
there are two things that must remembered though when comparing the 2 managers: 1) todays world of football is very different from what it was 12 years ago, how much was pesch signed for £550k? you certainly don't get a proven championship goalscorer for that now (except ricardo). 2) pulis has had a much bigger budget than macari ever did and this is due to the chairman having a different philosophy from the sell, sell, sell, that saw stein, pesch and sheron leave.

Good post go Stoke
Macari did lose 2 play off semis don't forget but agree a good job.
You could argue that Waddington had a huge budget- doesn't guarantee anything though.

Totally agree "go stoke." Although Pulis has had money to spend when he first arrived he didnt. He brought in loan signings and the odd free transfer and kept us up.
Of The money he has spent he has made a considerable percentage himself:
Akinbiyi. Paid - Free - Sold £800,000 Duberry Paid - Free - Sold £800,000 Higgy Paid £275,000 - Sold 2.7 mil
Im sure theres more, thats without the odd sale like patto and SJE

Darel, Halls, Chadwick
Macari similar with Stein although was ready to offload him to Newcastle for 600k - they signed Andy Cole instead-a player we should have snapped up from Arsenal. Had a fantastic game v us on loan for Fulham, Bristol City signed him the next season.

I think the proof of the pudding is what has happened by the middle of May, we have come through Stoke's traditional "Crap January" relatively unscathed but an injury to Ricci could leave us in trouble. The Macari years were great times, packed Boothen, Loooo Macari's red and white army chants, I remember one earlyin the second half against Vale (though we lost 0-1) when the "Lou" part of the chant was so loud it made your chest hurt.. I was as cynical as the rest when the Coates/Pulis axis was reformed, but they really do seem to have turned it around, and they deserve every plaudit they get if we reach "the promised land".
