RIP Harry.
HLF, it sounds like your Dad was a wonderful, caring man and my sincere condolences go to you, your mother, family and friends.
Having lost my own dad just 15 months ago, I can only tell you that, from my own experience, it never goes away completely mate, nor should it. But with time it will get easier, particularly if you concentrate on all those good times and memories, of which I'm sure there are many.
Once again, my sincere condolences and best wishes to all of you.

Huddysleftfoot As both our mums served on the council, I have known your mum & dad for quite some time. I was really shocked when I heard the news. Decent. caring people like Harry, and indeed Jean, are few & far between. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family, and a hug for your mum from me (Ann's son). Thanks Rob, Jean sends one back

Harry [and others like him] were the backbone of the working classes. They were the guys who turned the aspirations of ordinary people into reality: pittance into a decent living wage: semi-slavery into decent working conditions. OS doffs flat cap big style to them all.
R.I.P., Harry, and thank you for your contribution to our well-being.
My deepest and sincere condolences to his family and friends.
OS,

I think when someone has proved to be such an inspiration to so many people for so many different reasons then that truly is the greatest compliment you can get.

I don't think I've ever seen an RIP thread that says so much about the respect in which a person was held - by all the generations, the different backgrounds and ages who knew Harry Edwards and what he did with his life are just the best tribute to the man.

Spot on Sal.... You need an awful lot of courage to be a Trade Union Representative in this day and age....Anyone who fights for other peoples rights in the workplace is always going to be pilloried and slated by the right-wing press..who have a vested interest along with business..in keeping workers rights/wages to an absolute minimum...

Importantly it evolved out of a sense of justice rather than self promotion. Incidentally the funeral has now been arranged fpr Monday 15th June 1-45 pm at St Werburgs, High Lane Burslem (opp Haywood Hospital) then commital at Carmountside at 3-00 pm. Any donations should go to the Donna Louise Trust, as requested. Please enquire to McGoughs Funeral Directors. Tunstall for ay further queries. Again, can I thank you all for your inspirational contributions, I really cannot tell you all how uplifting they have been.

Huddysleftfoot - First time Ive seen this post and i would like to echo the comments made by the above about your father Harry.
My family, particularly my mum Betty and dad John who passed away 11 years ago worked on the council with both your mum and dad and had the utmost respect and fondness of your Dad and mum.
My mum was devastated when she heard the news about Harry as she lost a true friend.
I remember being invited down to the Lord Mayors parlour when your mum and dad were in office - Never let it be said that being the first citizens of Stoke on Trent went to their head they were still the warm friendly welcoming people they always have been.
Think mum misses giving Harry a lift to various meetings and misses his laughter and Jokes.
Mum sends her love to your mum Jean and she'll be in touch soon again.
God bless you all

God bless you all Mark...you've got me blarting here youth! Thanks so much for that, Betty may not remember me that well as I moved out of the City during your late Dad and Mum's year in office. People who worked around Mum and Dad during their year do say that they cannot remember a happier one, the doors to the Parlour were always open. ...laughter rang round the corridors. He's still talked about as if he's still here which is testament to his memory, thanks again mate, will pass your message on tomorrow to Mum and the family.
