The Sega Mega Drive is a 16-bit video game console released by Sega in Japan in 1988, North America in 1989, and the PAL region in 1990. It was sold under the name Sega Genesis in North America as Sega was unable to secure legal rights to the Mega Drive name in that region. The Mega Drive was Sega's fifth home console and the successor to the Sega Master System. The Mega Drive is part of the fourth generation era of consoles, and the first of its generation to achieve notable market share in Europe and North America. It was a direct competitor of the TurboGrafx-16 (which was released one year earlier) and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (which was released two years later). The Sega Mega Drive began production in Japan in 1988 and ended with the last new game being released in 2002 in Brazil. With a lifespan of fourteen years and 29 million units sold, it became Sega's most successful console. The console has a legacy with certain games available on the console being offered as downloads to be played on newer consoles, fan translations and indie game development. Had a megadrive in about 1991/92 when I was 3 or 4, moving on from what I vaguely remember as before having a commodore 64. Some of the games on it back then were truly great, in many ways it was better for me because it was always the same about 5:30am me n my dad got up and played for about half an hour or so before he went work. Then I carried on til I went school lol. As for quoting the sales figures, you have to remember that when it comes down to it, gaming wasn't that big during the late 80's and early 90's and has only become the huge role it has assumed in todays society really only from the latter 90's when reaching the ps2 era.
Also, during the time when the PS2 came out, more countries like China, and other such countries would more readily have things like this available. The Wii console itself really does seem to already be on its way out to most people, just about everyone I know who has one has it gathering dust in the corner, being cheap and all the hype around it means many people pick one up and after a short amount of time get bored of it.
Anyway, streets of rage, sonic and golden axe were the games I remember mostly, never able to get past about the 5th level on golden axe and never beyond about the 10th level on streets of rage, the one where you had to get up the blocks of flats if anyone remembers that lol.

Used to love playing Streets of Rage with my mates, used to take a whole day to complete. Loved the original, especially the music

I was only 3 or 4 at this time lol so I think I did well to get as far as I did. When I was about 6 I got a playstation and that was unfortunately the end of the megadrive for me, before it was put in the attic about 18 months ago it still worked, dunno if it still does lol.
