I was thinking about this topic this morning and I finally realised why this season is special.
We are gate crashers. We are not welcome here, but somehow got in. We are the ruffians at the middle class party. We have come to chuck your crudités at the wall, throw up on your carpets and and nick your stuff. At the end of it we may get thrown out, but we will be the only people who have had a really great time. Everyone has frowned at us, many have had a stern word to say about our behavior, but we're having a blast and it is all the better for having wrecked your party and ruined your fun.

Those of us who were around in the 70's will, no doubt, have a wry smile at the heading of this thread. We know it isn't, but at the same time, there is a specialness about this season for many of the reasons other posters have already said - none better than Malvern. We're the party-poopers who have made so many people look silly. Hopefully, we will stay up and build on what we have. Then, who knows, maybe one day we will match the times we had in the 70's.
For those who weren't around in the 70's this season is the daddy of them all. I'm enjoying it, immensely.

I'm probably biased but nothing, for me, will ever beat those golden years of the early 70s. The league cup, 5th in the league, two FA Cup Semis,(both of which we deserved to win) and two seasons in Europe - including getting knocked out by Ajax on the away goals rule. But this season has come closer to the enjoyment of those days than I ever dared to hope. stood on the old stoke end with 44,000 in the ground watching us draw with Ajax (who were a great team back then) I'd pick from one those 3 seasons early 70's.

i think this season & 92/93 are the best seasons i`ve seen- especially this seasons home form bearing in mind the quality of opposition we`ve stood against, marvelous.

considering im 16 and ive been a season ticket holder for 8 years, and since ive supported the mighty city id never seen them in the top flight until this season, got to be the best season for me. i tell all my mates its easy to support a big club, winning most weeks and having players and squads worth ridicolous ammounts, i can tell them of how i used to watch stoke on a f'kin freezing tuesday night playing the likes of gillingham, and now were finally back in top flight football, seeing stoke get promoted to the premier league has by far been the best day of my life!
we are here to stay aswell, we are stayin up ;D

I was there in the early 70s but I actually think that this is a better season because of the all-round package. Back then, we were always a small team run on a shoestring budget that punched above our weight, due largely to clever management by Waddo. But the Stoke of 2008-09 is better financed, better-run and better-geared to the future. You always felt, back in 1970-73, that blowing it in the semi's was a massive chance missed, never to be repeated - and we were right. But this year feels like the beginning of something - not the end. Beginning of what exactly ? I was brought up on the great 70's side....and they were a great side make no mistake. None of this current side would get in that team....we are in the top flight ....and we are creaming our pants because we may just about stay up. With this manager that is the best you will ever get....just scraping by.... And before you all start shouting and slagging me , I love STOKE always have , always will....but I won't be joining any T.P. fan clubs simply because he doesn't fool me and I won't get carried away in mistaken euphoria over winning the odd game like so many of you lot are. Macari was a better Stoke boss.....his team was better than this lot..... The club has gone as far as it will do under this current manager.
