For me the FA Cup defeat against Coventry in '87. I had never seen us go so far in the competition (and still haven't) and really believed we were going all the way just to be cheated by a dodgy ref who missed the blatant penalty on Dixon. I supported anyone they met in the subsequent rounds + can still see the smug fat Sillett bouncing round wembley with our cup. Still hate Coventry and always will. Apart from the obvious Arsenal semis which defeat still really hurts....

Chelsea away, though that was only a month ago. On top of that, losing to Gillingham in the play-off semis with our first taste of Rob Styles justice, though that one doesn't bother me so much now we've been promoted a couple of times.

So far this year: Bolton (A) - a good chance to kick-off the season and we f***** it up Boro (A) - Amdy Faye!!!! Derby (H) - missed a chance of a cup run Blackburn (A) - great backing, just before christmas, rovers in a rut, time for a first away win and we miss the chance Chelsea (A) - still can't believe how close we were
Palace at home last season still gets me as after the game I thought we had missed out on auto promotion...

Vale at home in the Autoglass when they beat us 1-0 with Van Der Laan scoring.Just knew after that they would go onto win the trophy.

Derby was definitely a right royal kick in the spuds, not just the manner of the defeat but the way their lot totally outsang us for 90 minutes. That hurt more...

Fulham at home this season. FFS Tone he's 6ft 6", Mamas injured and we're still playing the long ball game, why? 2 crucial missed all through no adaptation to the situation.

When I read the title of the thread I was going to say Coventry and that bloody ref was a soddin self confessed Stoke fan!!!! Talk about over compensating what a wanker he was!
But the hardest most painful most bitter defeat ever for me was away to Gillingham when Rob Styles decided that he was going to decide who was going to Wembley and not football!
I will hate Rob Styles forever for that night. The vile cheating smug little shit

trebor, my vague memory of that night was Clarkey kicking the ball away for his second yellow.
what I do remember clearly is a 'fellow' Stoke fan snapping off my car's wing mirror in anger on leaving the ground...

As soon as i saw the title I was going to say Coventry 87, Luton away in the Simod cup; my mate had his teaspoon consficated, it was attached to his keyring it's what he used to stir his ground bait with we had to go and get it off the police after, it was his lucky teaspoon

that Walsall game - Gudjons 'insane' formation (inc JOC at rightback!) was in all fairness working very well. Kavs superstrike should have been doubled but Dadason's (playing instead of Thorne who hadnt scored for 9 games) shot on the turn just went wide.
then Ward - superb for Stoke until this & never the same after - threw the ball into his own net for 1.1
what REALLY rankles re that game was the gutless - gutless - collapse that followed. that to me was the unforgivable fault & that lies at the managers door.simply awful.
Everyone banged on about the strange line up but tactically Walsall had been undone & like I say if Dadason scored we would surely have won the game & then who knows.

Didn't Rob Styles also ref the Gills final v Wigan? Dubious red card and Wigan had a shot a good 2 yards over the line as well.
Crewe away lost 2-0. Dreadful performance just after we beat Pompey and given ourselves a chance to stay up.
Leicester play offs. Awful one dimensional performance- hoofing the ball to Mike Sheron against two of the best headers of the ball in the country. Well done Macari.
Oxford home, lost 2-1. Relegation to the 3rd was a formality after that for the first time ever. We were winning 1-0 late on and one of the most blatant dives ever won them a penalty. Forgave him years later.................Mark Stein.

Leyton Orient away during the Macari era (forget the year) but we were abouyt to break the record for most matches unbeaten but lost 1-0. Think we had gone 27 unbeaten that season.

Remember that Orient game for a few reasons. Bobby Moore had just died and went to Upton Park for a pre game drink with a Hammers fan and to look at all the scarves etc . Got to Orient at 1 and got parked just before kick off. Was a nightmare.
For some bizarre reason remember leaving the ground and some kid was having a go at his Dad- was moaning they'd driven all that way and that he was going to miss 'Noel's House Party' on TV. Odd what sticks in your mind but had a few people laughing.

Theres been a few late collapses by us as we all know, but the one that hurt the most has to be Chelsea away a month ago.
To go there, a team with multi-million pound superstars, only lost once at home in god knows when and take the lead up until the 88th minute when Belletti scored the only goal he will ever score and then Fat Frank literally getting all the luck in the world was a real kick in the nuts, to go from sheer euphoria to complete devastation in the space of a few minutes broke me in half. How bloody close were we to getting the result of the bloody season.
Another that hurt was Boro away this season, Tuncay scoring bloody late when the ball took about 3 deflections off our back four and fell invitingly onto his right boot literally on the goal line, we sure dont have much luck.
Hopefully that will change soon.

Agree with both the Cov cup game and the Leicester play off. Leicester was especially bad as we were nailed on for the final but put in that pitiful performance and then lost to the sort of goal that 99 % of the time would end up at the back of the Stoke end.

tbh Chelsea away - or any defeat this season - has been water off a ducks back compared to the misery of the third division & Brain Little,Alan Ball e.t.c.
losing to Derby has pissed me off the most this season

Agreed Lordb the Derby game was a right kick in the nuts, has Ellington played since he scored? probably not, decided to play his best game then, the only issue with that would of been playing the Shit in the semi's, but I'd have fancied us to have caught them out.

Got to agree with The Gillingham and Walsall games. Still think that Kav goal against Walsall is one of the best goals i've ever seen for Stoke, techinally superb. The one for me though is Hull at home in the 2006-2007 season, we were fighting for a play-off place and we were 1-0 up and Nicky Barmby sneaked though and scored in the 90th minute. Absoutely gutted

Leicester City (A) - Playoff Semi Final-Filbert Street. I'll never forget Studger and Graham Potters miss. I was gutted for days after that as I knew we'd lose at home just based on chances missed in the first leg. Gillingham Away also in the playoffs. The little tw@t that was Hessenthaler scored a screamer with the last kick of the game in the first leg and you always knew that that could haunt us and it did. Was it Connor that hit the post in the last minute???? And it pissed it down in that open end!
Since then its only been the Chelsea game that has made me feel so dissapointed and frustrated after a game. I had a Ricardo Fuller moment that evening.

Another one in the Macari era was a defeat at home by Chester. Looking like an automatic spot was nailed on then a dreadful performance and we lost 1-0. Ended up losing to Stockport in the play offs. Seen some toothless performances but in such an important game that was shocking

From history, it has to be the semi-finals against Arsenal, especially the one at Hillsborough. At the time, I was too young to realise that this sort of thing didn't happen every few years. I have never sung at a match until after the final whistle ever since.
This season, the Derby cup match was a turning point. Our form hasn't been as good since and we have suffered a steady slip down the table.

FA Cup second round replay against the Vale at Vale park. 1992 (correct me if i'm wrong)
Cold wet night in Novemberish - We were 2-1 down after (Sandford scored for us I think and Foyle and Andy Porter for them i think. Any how.....we're 2-1 down and Big Dave Regis comes on after about 70 mins. Dave gets the ball and breaks for goal and beats the keeper....all that is left to do is bag it! He side foots it on target and starts to celebrate befor the ball comes to a stop in the mud before crossing the line!
I was only about 12 at the time so it is a little bit hazy but that is 1 game that i will never forget. I actually got in bed that night (it was a midweek match and I had school the next day) and cried lol. I grew up in Smallthorne and went to school at Holden Lane High so many of my mates were Vale fans lol! I was gutted! lol
