Just read Denis Smiths book , and I've got up to the 2nd FA Cup semi with Arsenal where Bob Wilson went off injured and they put a forward in goal , and it got me thinking back to the days before sub goalies .
When did they come in ? was it 92/93 or 93/94 ? I'm sure it was around that era or possibly a few seasons later , I know that our own Nigel Gleghorn was a corking goal keeper , seem to recall he went in goal for Brum once when they were already about 4-0 down and didn't let another goal in . Like goalkeepers picking up back passes its now a part of the game that is consigned to the history books , not sure I lament the demise of the pass backs, but I recall the buzz of seeing an outfield player going between the posts for the opposition , you sensed goals would flow, and so did the team and they would go barnstorming up the pitch to test out the new wearer of the goalie gloves (more often than not the inured keepers own gloves)

Nothing on the tele?

No I don't lament the use of sub goalies. The same way I don't lament the use of substitutes. When I started watching football there weren't any subs and injuries could change a game much more than they do now. Just because something could change the game doesn't mean it was a good thing.

We don't have to put a goalie on the bench- look at our seven subs away at Portsmouth.
Warnock never used to have one as he trusted Jagielka to be up to the task (which he proved more than once- most notably against Arsenal).
I know what you mean about there being a buzz of excitement when a centre forward (or whoever) takes the gloves but personally I would rather have Simmo between the sticks rather than Cort if Tommy picked up a knock.

I agree! I loved it when outfield players went in nets. Remember the Luton game at Stoke 4-4 made by our lack of a keeper.
There were certain things that used to happen that don't anymore. Years ago someone getting sent off was a major event where as now its almost a weekly happening. Goalies getting injured always made games more exciting.
The last time I remember it happening to us was Ronnie Sinclair away to Bournemouth (I think) when Cranson (I think again) took over. The Bobby Moore one was a classic (the sod even saved a penalty against us)
Today is no doubt better in many ways but it did generate lots of excitement when it happened

Didn't Tony Kelly (the fat one) go in goal and do an ace save from a free kick?

The last time I remember it happening to us was Ronnie Sinclair away to Bournemouth (I think) when Cranson (I think again) took over. It was gleggy who went in if I remember right. We were winning 1-0 at the time, steino pen & we drew 1-1. That big lanky black fella who went to Norwich scored for them. Cant remember his bloody name now.
