More complex issue than you'd think!
Students do have a bad name, "a leach on society" to the uneducated masss! however a mini economy thrives around students decending on our city provding many jobes & pumping hundreds of thousands £££'s
Anyone with half an ounce of common sence will be right behind you gaining an education and bettering our country; but sadly theres imboceles everywhere who will try to belittle you, i suggest when out deny your student roots for your own safety, enjoy the ride and emerge with good quals and £20k worth of debt!

Are You from round here or not? Plus what course are You on? There is antagonism towards students but don't worry about it.

I have nothing against students in general however I DO have issues against students who come into Staffordshire and dis respect it by moaning about the people and whinging about the area.
I know these are only a minority but a few months ago 2 women with posh accents got on the Keele bus to go the uni and all they did from Newcastle to Keele was moan about Stoke and what a dump it was.
They chose to come here. If they don't like it then leave it. Simple as that.

I am from solihull near Birmingham and i am doing Sport and Leisure management! The only reason i moved here to be fair was because i am a massive Stoke fan and it sounds a bit wierd but I have always wanted to live here because of it!

In that case feel free Jim. There is an anti student whiff about the place but I think it is for the reason I mentioned above mate to be honest.

Like i said you will be alright, plenty of decent folk but also alot of low life bums. Just know where to go and you will be ok.

Problem with Keele is, being a campus university, students don't have to mix with the local population - when I was there from 1980 > 1983 there were students I knew who never went off campus except when they went to Stoke Station to go home. There is also an attitude that students are wasters who should get a "proper" job - never understood that myself. Stokiejim - "P.s. wheres the nicest place in the whole of Staffordshire to go?!" The Britannia Stadium. of course! 2 serious suggestions - Apedale Country Park and Mining Museum, Chesterton. Cannock Chase.

One lad on my course was bad mouthing Stoke and he comes from Coventry! I was astonished and he got both barrels in return. Its not the most pleasant of areas but You chose to come here so shut the fuck up! That's what I tell them anyway!

All you need to do is stay away from certain places if dont want trouble, When I was studying in Lancaster it became apparent where not to go on a friday or Saturday night
Places to go...
Sugarmill (student friendly, most people will look like you) Aruba (its too cheap for people to care) Touch (never been but probably safe) Liquid (as above)
PLaces not to go...
Anywhere where your age group is not welcome (Brassingtons, Blakeys, Pablo Frankie's, the Iron Market) Old Brown Jug (its a Stokey Stoke place) The full moon (similar to above but they hate everyone in there who isnt bearded and long haired) Any local pub

I have drank in there for ten years and stopped drinking in there because Nigel cares about nothing else other than his student faternity. Strange considering as well the fll moon is a mainly Indie place now and hasn't been like the "holy inadequate" was for years. Jim disregard the statements about these 2 places.

Some staffs uni people are disliked because they do think they're a cut above when they got accepted into the uni off the back of E grades or even U's at college - obviously some people are at the university on merit, but others aren't, keele is probably a more respected university than staffordshire, I know a handful of people who couldn't do the A levels at sixth form and go to staffs uni - from what I've heard staffs uni teaches you the same way schools and colleges try to, they don't instill much useful knowledge or problem solving, just give you the information you have to regurgitate to pass the course.
I have no problem with people who go to staffs as long as they dunna get their heads stuck up their own arses about it, especially if they're only making up numbers because of poor grades.

No I do agree with your comments PCW about the jug, my dad used to drink in there, but then now i do, it is full of youngsters, but they are all people I recognise as Stokies. Thats really what I meant. They sell less pickled eggs in there day by day but more and more pepperami's.
Ive always had a bad reception from the full moon, one particular girl in there is a right nasty pasty.
I am a big fan of the Cherry Tree now theyve done it up, TV's every where you go its quality.

FFs, people wonder why Stoke gets tagged with various degrees of crap, when we can't actually be civil to fplk who give the local economy a big boost and of whom a decent percentage bring money, jobs and expertise into the city.
I, for one, welcome anyone into my city and pity those who don't. Short-sighted prachial attitudes will never move this city forwards. And as for 'dunna go into local pubs' - why?
I studied in Swansea and went drinking in the city centre and Cardiff. Chris, as an Englishman drinking in Wales you'd expect major problems, but if you're not a complete plum you'll be accepted. Those who can't accept those from outside the ST postcode should move out of the area themselves.
Students are a bit like Stoke City at the moment - an easy and predicatable target for stereotypical garbage.

I've been a student at both and what broke me with Keele was a) the wankers that populated it student wise and b) the wankers that populated it lecturer wise. One geography lecturer at Keele didn't know where the Sentinel newspaper came from. I could've thumped the bitch. That is my general experience of Keele. One of a distain for everything to do with Stoke-on-Trent. I fucking hated the place and couldn't wait to get out. No wonder its got the highest suicide rate for unis in the country-God foresaken hell hole it is! And it used to take me two hours on the bus to get there

Oh and with the courses I have done at both the teaching style is the same. That may obviously vary across the subjects. The lecturers at Staffs are far more approachable and less stuck up their own arses too I have found.

stokiejim - absolute balderdash. People of Stoke - on - Trent have never shown any animosity whatsoever to students in my experience, and I was a student of 4 years at your very own University.
Ignore the comments about the Brown Jug in Newcastle as well that is a top pub where all are welcome, the Full Moon across the road from it though is a very odd place, I agree with that comment.
