simmo should never have been dropped, i said so before the game, so what he's had a couple of dodgey moments but what keeper doesn't and how many games has he saved us points. hoult is passed it and is nothing more than cover for AN INJURED simmo, nothing more.
2games ago simmo was the best keeper in the league that doesn't change because of an error. oh well at least he only caused us to drop 1 place down the league

Simmo should have been dropped as should Sidibie, only problem is we dont have the squad to allow it and its proved today. Hoult is not good enough cover neither is Parkin.

hoult is a great keeper in this league for back up, not first team. did you see cech against Villa didn't he concede 4 and let a shot slide right past him and the week before against Blackburn he let in one like simmo did, against barnsley, even the best make mistakes. simmo is still, in my opinion, the best keeper in the league

Not listened today, but I get the impression that Hoult was left exposed and so had little choice and if he hadn't done what he did we would have conceeded a third goal a lost. Maybe someone who listened to radio stoke can tell me if that is accurate or not.

O.k.maybe Simmo shouldn't have been dropped, according to a lot of us. The point is, TP is the manager, and picks the team. Hoult saved a penalty, that was converted on the rebound. Leter he came out to tackle when the attacker was clear, and he took a chance on stopping him resulting in the sending off. As said somewhere else, it saved an almost certain goal, allowing Simmo to save from the free kick. We have to be on guiard against being too critical. Hoult hasn't played first team football for a LONG time, and actually seemed to be having a decent game. Football is a very funny game, and strange things happen in a game. Thanks Hoult, from me, for what you did do. Simmo has made mistakes, and played some blinders, give Hoult the same latitude. He's not perfect., but he was called on by TP, and did his best as he saw it. If they hadn't have scored off the rebound penalty, (how often does that happen?) he would have been an hero by now.

Hear that Hoult got sent off for the team. If he hadnt have tackled him, we would have been 3-2 down. So instead of slagging him off, maybe think a little that, he may have saved us a point. What did he have to lose? Some of you lot, really make me Laugh! Get a Grip!

good point tiger! hoult's sending off is immaterial and he did it for the team. simmo will come back in and do the job he has been doing all season, a good one, fine he has made a few mistakes but even the best do, look at petr cech, howler vs villa and arsenal in last 2 weeks!!

did he stop a certain goal? one of the top scorers in the league went round the keeper today and hit the post (fuller).
1st goal- keepers are always obstructed by players in the box, its their job to get around this.
couple of things to remember hoult in his last start was woeful against lower league opposition. he is very rusty having not played a first team game for god knows how long.
and to say he was having a good game- cullerton said about 4mins before the penalty "hoult could be playing into his 50's at this rate, he hasn't had anything to do yet".
anyway, onwards and upwards ,at least we know not to start him again.
gooaaaarn stoke 3points against hull and its an excellent xmas points haul.

Hoult did very little wrong -he (imo) was prevented from jumping for the ball when they scored & was left very exposed by his defenders. The red card was right, but he more than likely prevented thier forward from scoring. I hope this was the kick up the backside Simo needed - to return him to the best keeper in this division, something he most certainly has not been for the last two or three games

To be honest i dont like Hoults arrogance ive seen him in the dug out and when hes training hes always making jokes and laffing instead of working hard and concentrating. I think he is poor , i think age has got to him and hes not the keeper we saw at WBA .

Hoult did the professional thing. Rules for goalkeepers are:
1. Stop ball going in net legally 2. Get outside of your box and stop ball going in net illegally 3. Stop ball going in net illegally
Unlike Howard for Everton (badly let down by utterly rubbish defending from Yobo) - who didn't take everything when Yobo had gone AWOL (nor did he make it outside of his box ...) - Hoult did "the right thing" in making sure Simo had a better chance to stop Plymouth scoring, than would have been the case with only the woodwork back covering.
However: Blocked on Goal Line for second goal? I failed to hear Nige (or Acres) comment something along the lines of:- "Why is Hoult lying tangled in his own net, clutching his face and rolling around, apparently screaming in agony, Mick?!"
... But I ain't seen it, so I ain't slagging for that too much ...

I agree with your comments about Hoult's sending off Andy.
I'd have to blame Zak for there second goal. He just seemed to let the ball go over his head from the corner, and Hoult didn't expect it. Not sure though, will have to see the goals on the tele.

The thing about Hoult's sending off is that he should not, in my view, have been in such a desperate situation as to have to bring the player down.
And that is as much down to him as the sloppy defending that immediately preceded it.
His starting position was crap and he was on is heels. Even then he looked favorite to get to the ball first. Alas Russel looks a little heavier than I'm used to seeing him and he was very, very slow.
It is hard to be critical about the penalty situation. If a keeper saves a peno he has done well, I suppose. All I will say is that it was very savable once he had gone the right way and I think most keepers would expect to hold it or look top push it wide. Either option was do-able.
I have not heard post match interviews but I understand from this thread that there are claims he was impeded for their second.
That is crap.
The only thing that impeded Hoult was his own feet stuck to the goal line. The look from the defenders after the ball went in was justified. It was a keepers ball all the way as it flew across three yards out.
Poor stuff from Hoult in my opinion.

Flapping, waving,or drowning? Week in, week out, we see premiership , nay even England keepers making a total 'balls- up' 'tween the sticks.
I am afraid that a goalkeepers other woman has to be Misfortune.
It would be interesting to find out what percentage of goals people think are actually attributable to keeper errors as opposed to a players abilities?
We would hope that our reserve squad would provide back-up when the first choice is not available...or indeed provide a healthy rotation.
For Stoke, Hoult may well have played a superb game yesterday, and our manager should be congratulated on his decision making.
According to Sky, Simmo was on the bench due to a minor 'injury' picked up at the last game.
Miraculously ,when Hoult was dismissed, Simmo, our No.1 jumped up bravely (shrugging off any impediment )and came forward at the behest of the Almighty one.
What we can say is that such tonics have to be administered occasionally by the gaffer to minor injuries like the one Simmo had in the previous game.

OK. Given no one else will type it.
We can only "afford" one good keeper, and we have one in Simo. Simo had played 108 consecutive games up to yesterday, and was becoming "jaded" (people who go to games indicate he was at fault at Barnsley, if no where else)
Now then; which club is our No1 stopper a boyhood fan of? Sunderland What massive game is coming up shortly, which ALL Sunderland fans would like to play in? Newcastle
How much better a kick up the arse is there than saying ... a couple of games before said big game ... to said No1: "Oi! Just get back up off them lorals! Even if you are the number 1, performances like that mean you won't be keeping your place! You do know it's the FA cup in a week's time!"
And so he dropped him for the No2, away instead of at home (do not loose at home!), and still got a point. From what I heard, Simo looked fairly keen when he came on for the 10-minute cameo.
How well Houlty did or did not do isn't really in it ... Even with our tiny squad, Pulis still has to be able to give them a kick up the arse. I'm certain TP would like a No2 keeper who is at least as good as his No1, but we don't have the wedge to spooge on a sub-goalie of that standard (and havent been lucky enough to find another Foster as yet).
(MW: Cheers for the write up on the second goal. The phantom "block" was as phantom on the radio as it was live, apparently!)
ah
