I've criticised him in the past - mainly due to the lack of direct wing play he offers. This is, with reflection, unjust and highlighted given our lack of it on the left too! Credit where it is due, his records can not be argued with this season - they are superb.
Having had my reservations about the fee paid initially, he's confounded these critics this season (including me!!) and proved to be one of the team's best assets.
Everytime we have a set play there's a sense from the fans that we can score, and Lawro's delivery has definitely improved.
Well done Lawro.

Well said, nath. Like you, I had my doubts about the bloke because I reckoned he was never a winger. Perhaps he still isn't but his assists are proving invaluable to the team. Keep it up, Lawrence and well done.
OS.

Yep me also, I thought he was an ok player who's effort could never be questioned but his delivery from set plays was very poor. When Liam first signed for Sunderland I thought he was superb, it looks like he is getting back into that kind of form.

Liam has always been a good signing. He's never been an out and out winger and is more of a midfield player, playing out wide.
His delivery has always been half decent too. If people could put in perfect, pin point crosses every time games would end up 25-25, or something similarly stupid. Most wide players just put the ball in the right area and it's then up to the attacking players to get on the end of it. Liam's putting the ball in similar positions to what he's always done but now he has people like Shawcross, and of late Cort, who are bloody good at getting on the end of it, a classic example is Cort's goal yesterday.
Good player is Liam, IMHO. I'd be more than happy if we had a similar player to operate on the left side regularly. He was an absolute bargain at the price too, especially with the Chadwick fee taken into account.

You raise some fair points, bogus, though we need a little more variation in attack I feel - a genuine out-an-out winger who is direct in their wing play on the left ideally.
Wayne Routledge would do very nicely indeed.

Lawrence seems to hit patches of good form followed by patches of very bad form.
When he's on song he looks a snip at 500k, when he's not he looks way over-priced.
All in all I think we paid about the right amount for him...he's a decent player at this level, but wouldn't be anywhere near good enough for the Prem.

Wayne Routledge is a right winger not a left winger, nath. Would be a good signing though.

I agree, but he must have hit the 1st man about 3 or 4 times yesterday from corners !

As Routledge is the one with pace I'd play him in his normal position on the right and switch Lawrence to the left. He plays as well there when called upon to do so and he isn't a natural winger anyway so his performance should not suffer too much. For example, each of his three "assists" yesterday did not depend on which flank he was playing on as two were dead ball situations and the third was a through ball.

Parkerson, as Dave says, one of the benefits of getting another winger into the side is that it gives us the chance to play Cresswell alongside Fuller. I'm not saying it would definately work but we surely need to find out if it will. Fuller is the flair player who on his day is magic, Cresswell is the workhorse but one who shows signs of being a consistent goal scorer if we play him in a striking role.
If we did get another winger in then the player to make way would be Sidibe. I like Sidders but I think he might be better suited to coming off the bench against tired defences and his hold up play if he is fresh towards the end of games we are winning would be a bonus..

I like Sidibe - offers a lot to the team at the moment, and seems a decent guy to boot. I say 'at the moment' as I believe any future significant improvements in the side will render him slightly less influential than he is now. And, coupled with the fact he gets a nosebleed within 20 yards from goal, it's going to have to be him to make way for Cressy OR Parkin, who will become more of an asset.

I have critisised Lawro on more than a few occasions. i have said he's too fancy and tries do too much, but his performances in the last 8 games or so have been nothing short of top notch. I am so glad he is part of our team. Against Burnley we looked lost wihtout him. He's a brillaint asset to any team

He was the tird best midfielder in the Championship actim index before yesterday's game - there must be a decent chance he will have risen when the revised index is published.

Lawrence is class.
Anyone who has ever thought any differently just doesn't know what they are talking about! ;D
Seriously though, he is playing well at the moment, and long may it continue. His corners are generally crap though, but at present he seems to be getting one right per game, and Cort is usually on hand to ram them home!
Perhaps he could give Mama some lessons.
