Stoke City were seeking an initial fee of £750,000 from Scunthorpe when the two clubs went into battle over Martin Paterson's value at a transfer tribunal today.
But Scunthorpe were believed to be offering £100,000 up front for the 20-year-old former Stoke trainee.
Stoke's director of football John Rudge was due to represent Stoke's case at today's hearing in front of a judge and representatives from the Football League, the League Managers' Association and the Professional Footballers' Association.
Stoke's case should benefit from the tribunal being postponed until now as Tunstall-born Paterson has bagged eight goals in 17 starts and four sub appearances since leaving the Britannia in the summer. He has also been called into the full Northern Ireland squad for their recent European Championship qualifiers to underline his recent rise to prominence.
"We believe we have a strong case," said Rudge.

Well with our luck in tribunals they'll probably give us a bag chews and a can of fizzy pop and £1 pocket money each week for a year!

To be honest is no way we can justify a fee of 750k at the time of his sale- 250 k more than say Fuller!!!!! Scored 1 goal for us
Obviously a way to try a boost the figure
200k would be a very good price with a small sell on

Can understand them trying for £750k but they're going to look pretty stupid when the tribunal asks why we never played a striker we rated so highly and instead loaned him out to Grimsby before offering him a 1 year contract was it ? on a few hundred quid a week when he was out of contract.

I hope no-one at the tribunal has got their hands on the Cardiff v Stoke DVD from last season!

I think the best we can hope for is 200k and a massive sell on clause (25%) and hope he continues to make those of us who didn’t particularly rate him, look foolish and secure a big money move.
What is the reason it's taken so long by the way?

It was clearly a mistake to not make a greater attempt to keep him but anyone who says they knew he'd be amongst the top scorers in the Championship at Christmas is a lying bastard!

Clearly one bastard who has been known to lie didn't know he'd be amongst the top scorers in the championship or he wouldn't have sold him

If he was worth £750k, he wouldn't be going to a team 19th in the Championship and among the favourites for the drop

Just out of interest, what happens if a price is set by the tribunal that Scunthorpe arent prepared (or able) to meet? Does he automatically come back to us or is the tribunal fee final, and they have to accept it and pay no matter what?

He is our player again if Scunthorpe can't pay the tribunal figure. But, he is of course, out of contract, so Stoke would have to decide what to offer him. If he refused the new offer then he would be stuck looking for another club but we would not need to pay him whilst he looked.
