Have to say I'm flabbergasted by the incompetence of this guy.Having consulted everyman and his dog about who should be the England boss (when 90% of all supporters wanted Jose anyway) they offer the job to Jose and give him the weekend to think over it. He says no and now who ever gets the job is clearly at least 2nd choice and position undermined before they start. Ring any bells?? Appointing the buffoon after the big Phil fiasco. Why didn't they just contact Jose ask if he was interested before any interview and offering the job??? Complete joke and a complete waste of space Barwick - you are an incompetent joke.

Jose was clearly always playing a game with the FA in order to raise his own profile. I suppose the FA always had to call his bluff but it does leave them looking rather foolish (again!).
Capello might just be the man to shake up a few of the oversized egos in the England dressing room though. He managed it at Real Madrid and won the title in his only season there and I think he'll be able to rise above the "second best" tag.

"Jose was clearly always playing a game with the FA in order to raise his own profile" Don't think he really needs to raise his profile as it couldn't be higher. I think he's waiting for Barça to sack Rijkaard which could be soon if they fail to beat Valencia and Real Madrid in the next two weeks. Capello is the TP of international football. I would like to see someone with more "flair". Real Madrid won the league by default last season. Also it was his second liga with RM he won it when he was manager in 1996-97 and that was a real achievement as it was Bobby Robson's free scoring Barcelona who finished second with Ronaldo in his finest season ever.

I do not see the big rush in appointing a successor to McLaren if Jose the first choice has turned this down. Why we do not wait until after the Euro's and see if any of the top coaches from there want the job.
It's a bit like Deja vu when we wanted Big Phil and he turned this down and then we rushed into appointing McLaren. Afterall we do not have a competitive game until after the Euro's do we ?
Appoint a caretaker manager until then and make your decision after. I would rather have Redknapp than Capello. Just another big foreign name employed on a massive wage !

It seems Mourinho was just playing a game of some sort yes. Hard to believe he learnt anything new about the job between declaring interest and withdrawing.
If Capello can get England as astute as his club sides have been it will be a great appointment.

Unless, Jo, he realized that the FA would never go for the major "shake up" that he had planned. Once he had said he had a blueprint for the future of the England set-up, I suspected his days were numbered. The FA don't want someone telling them what to do.

Possibly but I'd be surprised. If anyones going to throw their weight around behind the scenes and want input from top to bottom its Capello and Lippi and they are now the main contenders.

Mourinho was clearly never genuinely interested in the job. He cockteased the FA as a way of seeing "hurry up and get me" to the likes of Milan and Barca.
Capello would be a good appointment IMO. His football might not be entertaining but his record is phenomenal.

What fantastic news though and what a let off.
Jose - sacked by Chelsea for producing boring football is not the man to resurrect English football.
What's the rush why don't we wait until after the Euro's and see who's available then.

I agree with the no great rush too rocket (in fact i posted the same thing the day McClown went and suspect you of plagarism!), I said today i'd rather hiddink or scolari as they have international experience in buckets rather than just club, just wait for the Euros to pass by with a caretaker in charge. Maybe Pearce could handle the caretaker and U21s simultaneously.
Saying that I wouldn't be narked if Capello is holding an England scarf on the back page tomorrow.

I dont think anyone can resurrect the english game, the way things are, we have players who only look good players because of the foreign talent playing around them.
I also dont think Jose ever really considered the England job, but at least he would put some metal back into the National team, and thats what the English game has always been based on.

Why Pearce keeps getting mentioned in any capacity is beyond me. He inherited a good U21 side and the stuff he produced at Man City was dire, turgid stuff.

If boring football is a criterion remember Capello's Milan could be one of the dullest sides ever. BUT in the name of optimism remember their staggering brilliance in the 1994 European Cup Final.

Who ever it is (and i am staggeringly ambivalent about Capello tbh) it should not be Barwick and the board of clowns that appoint him.
They need to go asap and simply not be allowed to make ano "we got the second best man with in undue, unseemly and unnecessary haste in" type cock-up.
Arse wipes the lot of them.

Capello has all the right credentials. The only question is whether his methods translate to international football. But unless a gaffer has experience of international success that will always be the question.

Lets wait till after the Euros lads and see who is available.

The majority of England "fans" know fuck all about football anyway, certainly the ones prepared to phone a poxy call-in show. This is the same bunch of retards that demanded an English manager the last time. As far as i'm concerned, if Nigel from Peterborough doesn't want Capello as manager, then Nigel from Peterborough can watch something else whn we're on the telly.

My thoughts exactly on the idiots who call in to these shows, but have to agree that Capello is not the man for me.
Should I go and watch something else when England play ?
Looking at the press aswell they just write any lot of tosh on this subject, a week ago they interviewed everyone including Fergie, Wenger et al who all backed Jose. Now all of a sudden all these back Capello. Christ on a bike who employs these idiots. The only problem is I get the feeling that Barwick reads all this and takes it on board !!!! ;D
