The depth of hatred some people felt towards them was partly contrived.

I do ah, when we get to play them it is electric. I can't see them going down but if they do they will only go lower and lower. We could all be stafford converts and go support em when we can't make stoke away etc.

Wolves have always been the proper team to focus our dislike on in my humble opinion.
Vale were created for our amusement.

At school/college, I used to get loads of abuse from Vale fans when they used to regularly beat us and/or finish above us in the table.
It's very childish but nowadays I still do a little victory dance whenever the Burslem beggars lose.
Gooooarrrn, get relegated you bunch of soap dodging scummers!

Port Vale is part of Stoke-on-trents proud footballing heritage and should remain so.Any man born in this city who wishes their demise should hang his head in shame. It is narrow-minded stupidity to wish upon them a downward spiral ,especially when the area economically needs all the help and prosperity it can get. Many Stoke fans through the decades have supported both clubs alternately. It now amazes me how shallow and warped the minds of some Stoke City have become.
Personally, I would love to see them up there with Stoke challenging for promotion in the Championship. It would undoubtedly add extra spice and interest and with it extra prosperity. I anm absolutely certain that given time Lee Sinnott will become an inspired choice and turn the club around.
I wish them all the best....which is far more than I could muster for the likes of Crewe Alex.!

Not born in the Potteries and never had any interest whatsoever in them- wasn't until reading this MB last week I actually knew they were struggling so much.
As above always saw Wolves as the nearest we have to a local rival.

Vale were fondly thought of by Stokies for a long time. In 82/83 they were going for promotion and their HT score wasn't read out and thios led a to a chant of "What about the Vale?" When their score was finally read out...hey were winning.....and that led to huge cheer from the Boothen. Nobody would admit to that now but thats what happened. It got nasty around the time they beat Spurs.

If they were serious rivals to us, I would be personally relishing the situation. The derbies are always brilliant, I don't like to see them failing so much and if they ever get promoted to the same division as us I'd be happy enough knowing that we'll have a couple of proper derbies, none of this Wolves bollocks!

I would prefer never to have to play Vale again. It was vile. And we usually got done over.

Yeah we always got done over, stupidly as well (like a fucking ball getting stuck in the mud) but the atmosphere was always brilliant. Can you really deny that? Much rather have them than Wanky Wanderers who're always silent when we play them.

I actually agree with mumf on something, the first paragraph of his reply anyway I would rather see only one team in stoke on trent strong enough to compete in the top league if possible and to do that if it means Valke getting promoted and us merging then so be it. At present our crowds mean we have to eat scraps thrown from the posh table, if you know wha I mean

If there's gonna be a couple of leagues gap between us I'd rather it was because we were doing well than because they were doing badly.
Port Vale is part of Stoke-on-Trent, if they went bust that's a couple of thousand more kids who'd be heading down the shops to buy Man U tops. Good luck to 'em in this commercialised game of ours I say.

Just what I was going to say, Joe. Yes they're a small club, they've punched above their weight for a while and now they're on the way down again - but look at the state poor old Burslem's in, it's so good that there's still a league team in a town that's had so much shit kicked out of it and all the best to them.

I keep an eye out but personally onner fussed. ;D
Seriously it would be blinding to have another potteries derby but unless a miracle happens in the vup it would be out of the question these days. Back in the old days of division1/2 we used to look forward too them but as time goes on and the clubs drift apart most couldn't care less.

I don't want them to go down or go bump or any of it. I enjoy laughing at them and that's quite right, but it's not a serious rivalry around here, just a bit of fun. Like mumf says, there were indeed times when many Stoke fans used to go to the Vale on alternate weeks and some even went to Crewe on a Friday night! They should never have sacked Rudge.
