Sir Stan = first footballer to win the ballon d’or (world footballer of the year) 1956, long before Messi Ronaldo etc. Unlike today’s footballers he would run couple of miles from terraced house in Seymour Street, Hanley to the Victoria Ground, Stoke. Imagine these lot today even considering that? As for gentlemen in the game, me & brother used to collect autographs in the school holidays late 60’s/early 70’s ….. most polite and friendly were probably Banks, Mahoney, Conroy and actually Wadd’o - a proper gent. Stood chatting to us one day and said Leeds had been in for Dennis Smith (he would have fitted into that Revie team) and Liverpool had been in for Terry Conroy. (before he’d had his cartridge issues which slowed him down a bit)

I did once hear a story about Micky Adams where he came across as a genuinely decent and nice guy after a couple of other players had let themselves down.
Outside of Stoke once met Jimmy Floyd Hasselbeink and he was a genuinely lovely guy.

Jimmy Mcllroy a craftsman and a gentleman I remember I couldn't believe it when we signed Jimmy McIlroy, a wonderful player and "craftsman" describes him perfectly. ps. What a forward line Matthews, McIlroy and Mudie. Thank you Mr. Waddington.
