Who are the true Gentlemen of Stoke? Both great people on and off the pitch
Stan off the pitch, did he have a hard tackle in him?
It’s reasonably well known that Lineker never had a red, any Stoke players that were saints?

Lineker never had a yellow, the big lefty, woke, virtue signaling, tree-hugging snowflake.

Lineker never had a yellow, the big lefty, woke, virtue signaling, tree-hugging snowflake. Never wore long studs either. Strange old game.

George Eastham was the gentleman of my era.
I remember folk in the social club after games addressing him Mr.Eastham.

Imagine that. Nowadays if a United player like Charlton avoided many bookings we would try and claim a United bias, Whereas if he was a Stoke player he could be getting booked every month.
As regards this thread I would only go as far as "Gentleman George" Eastham.

How about Peter Dobing off the pitch tweed jackets, well dressed, smoking a pipe, very quiet.................but on the pitch quite the opposite at one point held the record for the longest suspension.

George Eastham was the gentleman of my era. I remember folk in the social club after games addressing him Mr.Eastham. I regularly went to watch 'the A team' at Lilleshal Road on the morning of a home game at the Vic. Banksy and Eastham were often there to watch and give encouragement to the youngsters. Eastham would always find time to talk to us kids and I remember well his car battery going flat one day and we all (Banksy included) had to push him to start it. Hard to believe in this day and age that a world cup winner would be called upon to do such a thing

As regards this thread I would only go as far as "Gentleman George" Eastham. George played 500+ games and his only booking was in his very last Stoke appearance when some jobs-worth referee booked him for taking a free kick too quickly.

I'm just a wee bit too young to have seen him play, but I had the pleasure of meeting Gordon Banks a couple of times and he was an absolutely lovely chap. A proper gentleman. I still find it surreal that I got to talk all things Stoke City with him, just like I would with any other Stokie.

Tony Ford. One of my Stoke heroes. I think he ripped Mick Mills to shreds in a match against Grimsby and Millsy signed him for the next season.
Great pro was Fordy and a lovely bloke off the pitch too. Scored a few belters for us (that volley at Shrewsbury was the best) I think he lived in Woore for a few years and I saw him in Newcastle one afternoon shopping. He'd long left Stoke and I said hello to him and told him how I loved his time at Stoke. He was genuinely humbled and surprised at that! So.........
Tony Ford. All round good chap, good solid footballer, superb right winger, kept out of trouble and not a bad bone in his body.
When we lost 6-0 at West Brom. He gets brought down by a late tackle then he kicks up at the Albion player and it's studs in his face. Straight red. Now at the time I couldn't really see what had happened with the crowd of players so seeing Fordy sent off was totally unbelievable. Mistaken identity surely, pissed off at the tackle and a bit of dissent maybe? Us Stokies couldn't believe it. Then I saw the tv footage of the match and there it was. Completely out of character for Tony who really was not that sort of player.
Then he went and signed for West Brom!
One silly thing apart, Tony Ford, fo me, a true Stoke City gent.

Muniesa is the player that really stands out for me from my era (been following Stoke since around 2004), though Bojan and Sidibe are also definitely good shouts.
I also always thought Matty Etherington came across as an extremely decent bloke who was very grateful for the opportunity we gave him to turn his life around.

Sir Stan. Wouldn’t let the council name a road after him with the prefix ‘Sir’ he said at the time I don’t like that, I’m just an ordinary man. You can’t get more gentle or classier than that!
